Woman living with HIV coverage of human story by Humans of Thimphu.

“In 2006 when there was very minimal awareness of HIV in the country, I went to have my routine checkup for my pregnancy and was told that I had HIV. Everyone at the time referred to it as the ‘untreatable disease of AIDS’. As one may imagine, I was scared. Thankfully, I received proper counseling from health workers, and they helped me follow a plan so that my unborn child would not be infected. The mother must take medication for HIV and compulsorily go to the hospital for child-delivery. After delivery, the baby is also given medication and tested after two years. They told me that a baby has a 5-10% chance of transmission during pregnancy, 10-15% during birth, and 25-30% through breastfeeding. I have four kids. Thankfully all of them are HIV-negative. The three kids born after my diagnosis were never breastfed. I only fed them lactogen that the hospital provided us till the baby turned one.

In 2011 on World AIDS day, a few HIV-positive people including my husband and I came forward on TV. Initially when my husband told me about this plan, I was strictly against it. I even told him that I wanted to separate if he went through with it. However, around November that year, I realized that if I came forward with my story I would be able to share my experience as an uneducated woman diagnosed with a scary disease that people did not know much about. I believed that it might help people going through similar situations and ease the stigma around HIV. In the following years, awareness has increased and stigma, although prevalent, has been reduced.

After coming out on TV, I was evidently discriminated against. Everyone knew about my status as an HIV patient and when I started weaving, an activity I was interested in, with a group of people in Changzamtog I was told to leave in just two weeks. The owner told my sister that she could stay but complaints flew in from customers just because I was working there. They thought that if I pricked my hand and my blood stained the clothes I was weaving, anyone who touched it would be infected, which is not true.

However, the situation has improved slightly over the years and Lhaksam has played a huge role in it. Before, people did not know the difference between HIV and AIDS. But now most know that HIV is not transmitted through mere physical or verbal contact or even from sharing bathrooms, although a lot of silly notions still exist. There is a center for Lhaksam at Genekha where we host HIV positive people who don’t have means to earn a livelihood or are from very remote places where they cannot avail medication and treatment. We give them work here at the center. There are about 30 people right now, including around 12 kids. Some of these kids are living with HIV and others are simply here with their parents. There is a school close by so they go there. Most of them do not complain about discrimination at school but we have had instances of these kids finding it difficult to make friends because of where they come from.

Getting sick is never fun, even when it is something as mild as the flu. HIV is a lifelong condition and one that requires a lot of care, medication and will power. I want to urge everyone to learn all preventative measures. We can never tell who has HIV, so it is always important to be careful and practice safe s*x.”

Reached out with an HIV awareness and sensitization program to the recovering addicts at the Bhutan Institute of Wellbeing, a YDF-operated rehabilitation center located at Chimethangkha, Tshaluna, Thimphu. Drug and alcohol use is closely linked to increased vulnerability to HIV transmission, as it impairs clear thinking and decision-making, often leading to high-risk behaviors.

As an organization dedicated to supporting people living with HIV, one of our core objectives is to educate the general public on HIV prevention and safer practices. During the session, participants were also offered HIV testing using oral self-test kits, enabling them to know their HIV status quickly and privately.

Even after more than 30 years of the HIV epidemic in Bhutan, we are still striving to end it. Yet, HIV continues to spread at an unprecedented rate. As of June 2025, a total of 1,047 cases have been detected, with 81.6% falling within the economically active age group of 15–49 years. It is deeply concerning that 12.3% of those infected are youth aged 15–24.

Our mission will continue, and we hope that every Bhutanese citizen will come forward to support this important cause.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Director, program team, and participants at the Bhutan Institute of Wellbeing for their cooperation in making our program impactful and meaningful.

Initiating voluntary HIV testing allows you to know your HIV status. This step provides significant benefits, including early detection and timely access to treatment. With breakthroughs in HIV treatment, people living with HIV can now lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Treatment also works as prevention—once an HIV-positive individual begins antiretroviral therapy and achieves an undetectable viral load, there is zero risk of transmitting the virus to their intimate s*xual partners.

This groundbreaking advancement gives us real hope in ending HIV/AIDS as a public health, social, economic, and development challenge.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE THE STEP AND GET TESTED FOR HIV TODAY! THERE IS NO SHAME IN KNOWING YOUR HIV STATUS.

7 Things Everyone Should Know About HIV
Break the stigma. Share the truth.

1️⃣ What is HIV?

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the immune system. With treatment, people with HIV can live long, healthy lives.

2️⃣ How is HIV transmitted?

HIV spreads only through specific modes:

Unprotected s*x — when condoms are not used properly or consistently (most common)

Mother-to-child transmission — during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding

Unsafe blood transfusions or organ donation — using unscreened or unsafe blood/products

Injecting drug use — sharing unsterilized needles or syringes

HIV is NOT transmitted by casual contact such as:

Swimming or bathing together

Hugging, handshakes, or sharing food

📌 HIV is found in blood, semen, s*xual fluids, and breast milk.

3️⃣ Can HIV be prevented?

Yes. Prevention includes:

Correct and consistent condom use

Regular testing

Giving birth at health facilities to reduce mother-to-child transmission

4️⃣ Does HIV mean AIDS?

No. HIV is the virus. AIDS is the advanced stage of infection if untreated.
Most people with HIV never develop AIDS with early diagnosis and treatment.
HIV is manageable; AIDS is preventable.

5️⃣ What is U=U?

Undetectable = Untransmittable
People on treatment with undetectable viral loads cannot pass HIV to others.

6️⃣ Why does support matter?

Stigma causes more harm than HIV.
People living with HIV deserve respect, support, and dignity — not discrimination.

7️⃣ Should I get tested?

Yes! HIV testing is quick, safe, confidential, and often free.
Knowing your status helps protect you and others.

Over the past weeks, the Lhak-Sam advocacy team reached out to 909 participants through education and awareness programs at Yangchen Gatshel HSS, Wangbama CS (Geney), Central Detention (Male Lockup), and SELISE Bhutan.

Sessions focused on accurate HIV information—modes of transmission, and treatment efficacy, including how HIV treatment works as prevention—and dispelling myths and misconceptions, and empowered voluntary counseling and testing. Condoms and lubricants were distributed, and administered OraQuick self-test, with 100 detainees voluntarily tested for HIV.

We sincerely thank all participants for their active engagement and the management teams for their generous support in making these programs possible.

HIV and AIDS Awareness and Sensitization – Samdrup Jongkhar, Nganglam, and Panbang
A total of 24 awareness sessions were conducted across Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag and the Dungkhags of Nganglam and Panbang, reaching 2,263 individuals (1,083 male and 1,180 female). During these sessions, 567 HIV screenings were carried out using OraQuick self-test kits, and 4,752 condoms were distributed.
The primary objective of the initiative was to disseminate accurate information on HIV, including modes of transmission, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), availability of lifelong treatment, and to dispel common myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease.
Some of the frequently asked questions included:
1. Does saliva contain HIV, since the oral HIV test uses saliva?
2. Are there protective laws for people living with HIV who face discrimination?
Lhak-Sam extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dasho Dzongdag, the Drungpas of the two Dungkhags, and the RBA Military Commander in Dewathang for their unwavering support in coordinating and facilitating the advocacy program.

Lhak-Sam Conducts Successful HIV & AIDS Awareness Campaign in Trashiyangtse

The advocacy team from Lhak-Sam successfully conducted an HIV and AIDS awareness campaign across Trashiyangtse Dzongkhag from 28th March to 10th April 2025. The campaign reached a total of 1,660 individuals (1,039 males and 805 females), during which 2,160 condoms were distributed and 219 individuals were tested using oral HIV test kits.

The program aimed to educate communities on HIV prevention, transmission, and treatment, while addressing stigma and dispelling common misconceptions surrounding the disease. Participants were encouraged to take proactive steps toward their health through early detection and preventive measures. The distribution of condoms emphasized the importance of safe s*xual practices in reducing the spread of HIV and other s*xually transmitted infections (STIs).

Lhak-Sam extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dasho Dzongdag and the District Education Officer for their unwavering support in coordinating and facilitating the campaign.

Special thanks go to Mr. Chime Dorji, Principal of Tsenkharla Central School, and Vice Principal Mr. Kencho Tsheten for their warm hospitality and for providing free accommodation to the advocacy team, enabling the smooth ex*****on of the campaign.

Additionally, on their way to Trashiyangtse, the team visited Lungzor Prison in Trashigang, reaching out to 184 inmates and 19 police personnel and their families. We sincerely thank the Royal Bhutan Police Headquarters for granting permission to conduct our program.
