‎The CRRH family bids a bittersweet farewell to Lam Tso Zin Wom Penjor. After more than a year of selfless service and spiritual guidance, Lam is moving on to his next posting in Thimphu, Barp Lhakhang Lam.

‎During his time at CRRH, Lam Tso Zin Wom became a cornerstone of the community. He offered much more than spiritual rituals; he provided a sense of calm and hope to patients in their recovery and served as a steady source of inspiration for the staff.
‎
‎As he prepares for his new chapter in the capital, the entire CRRH family joins together in wishing him the very best. They express their deepest gratitude for his presence and pray that his future endeavors in Thimphu are met with great success and merit.
‎The CRRH family remains forever grateful for the blessings and guidance shared by Lam during his stay.

‎CRRH conducted 5th edition of CRRH Lecture Series for the Advancement of Clinical Skills (CLASS) on 28 April 2026. The session was delivered by Dr. Sagar Rai, Orthopedic surgeon at CRRH.
‎
‎Dr.Sagar emphasized on the importance of osteoarthritis as another emerging Non-communicable disease(NCD) in the Global setting and in Bhutan and the need to properly diagnose, educate and treat the disease.
‎
‎Osteoarthritis is rising due to improved overall living standards, life expectancy, sedentary lifestyle and obesity. The session also included details on epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors and classifications of the disease.
‎
‎Dr.Sagar also stressed that patient education on osteoarthritis is the cornerstone of disease management and the treatment should not end at drugs, injections and medications alone.
‎Physical therapy, aerobic exercises and a healthy lifestyle are also as crucial in controlling the disease progression.
‎
‎If you have joint pain or if you know someone who has debilitating joint swelling and pain, please consult a health care center as it can be osteoarthritis.
‎
‎More than 90 participants attended the session, both in person and via the online platform.

‎CRRH conducts CLASS sessions monthly in a hybrid mode, allowing participants to join either in person or online.

This cross-sectional study assessed leishmaniasis knowledge, attitudes, and practices among 343 healthcare professionals at tertiary care hospitals in Bhutan. Knowledge gaps were widespread — only 13.8% had good knowledge (≥70% score), with a median score of 6 out of 20 — and familiarity with forms of the disease, diagnostic tests, treatments, and follow-up care was consistently low. However, reading national guidelines was strongly associated with better knowledge, and most participants expressed willingness to engage in continuing medical education, advocacy, and health education activities.

This is the first research grant funded paper published by Health and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) in Gelephu. Data collection was supported by the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan through Research Grant to Monu Tamang under the Moderna Project Support. The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) assisted with publication expenses.

The Health and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) is a collaborative research excellence centre of the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan in CRRH, inaugurated by Dasho (Dr.) Lotay Tshering on 19th July, 2025. The HMRC provides avenues for clinicians, health workers and academicians from within and outside Bhutan to generate high-quality scientific data aimed at improving healthcare policies and practices. Some of the core areas of focus of HMRC includes research and innovation, capacity building/training and research advocacy.

‎Coinciding with the auspicious day of Zhabdrung Parinirvana yesterday, Central Regional Referral Hospital formally welcome three nursing professionals to our team. They joined us following their six month specialized certifications from the Faculty of Nursing and Public Health, KGUMSB bringing valuable expertise to critical care.
‎
‎Sumitra Tamang and Meto Seldom joined the hospital after completing their specialization course in the Pediatric Intensive Care, and Saron Khawas in the Adult Intensive Care.
‎
‎They were welcomed with Trashi khadar by the Hospital Lam Tso zin, followed by lighting of butter lamps and prayers for good progress.
‎
‎We are confident that their advanced training and commitment to patient care will significantly strengthen our clinical services. We look forward to their contributions to the CRRH family.

‎Home-Based Palliative Care services at CRRH, Gelephu were initiated in December 2024 to improve the quality of life for patients with chronic, debilitating illnesses requiring end-of-life care.
‎
‎Through a holistic approach, a multidisciplinary team—Medical Officer, Nurse, Health Assistant, Physiotherapist, Pharmacist, and Drungtsho—supports patients and their families by addressing medical, psychological, spiritual, and practical needs, while empowering families with basic caregiving skills.
‎
‎Services include medication refills, physiotherapy, nursing care (wound dressing, NG tube insertion, urinary catheterisation, tracheostomy care, and blood sample collection), as well as traditional medicine (acupuncture), spiritual therapy, and bereavement support.
‎
‎Home visits are conducted every Thursday, with flexibility based on patient needs.
‎
‎A total of 80 patients in Sarpang are currently enrolled in the home-based palliative care services.

During this time, they were placed across various departments, where they demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to learning and patient care. Their active participation and valuable contributions to service delivery are sincerely appreciated.

Women’s Health Physiotherapy was introduced at CRRH in 2023 to support women through pregnancy and the postpartum period – from preventing and managing common health conditions to promoting overall wellbeing. At the heart of this service is prenantal physiotherapy; a program of safe, guided exercises and education designed to prepare mothers-to-be for pregnancy, labor and reovery after birth.

The Prenatal Program consist of three components: Basic, Advanced and Birthing sessions.

The Basic Prenatal Session begins around 26 weeks of pregnancy. Mothers-to-be learn about the body changes during pregnancy, receive nutritional tips, and are guided on warning signs to watch for, along with simple home exercises to support their health and wellbeing.

The Advanced Prenatal Session begins at 27 weeks of pregnancy, focusing on step-by-step guided exercises - including mobility, strengthening, breathing and relaxation techniques - to improve fitness and ease common pregnancy discomforts. These sessions continue right up until the due date.

The Birthing Session, held at 37 weeks of pregnancy, prepares the mother-to-be for labor and delivery through guidance on stages of labor, the best positions for giving birth and practical tips for a safer, smoother birth. A spouse or caregiver is required to attend this session.

In short, attending all three sessions helps you stay strong, feel prepared, and have a safer birth.

On World Health Day, April 7th, five healthcare professionals from CRRH were honored by Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, the health minister, at a ceremony held in Sheytimi, Merak. The awards recognize long and dedicated service, meaningful contributions to remote communities and excellence in healthcare delivery. The initiative, at its core, aims to motivate and support retention of healthcare professionals in the country.
