The Assistant Minister of Health, Hon. Lawrence Ookeditse, opened the 2025 Health Informatics in Africa Conference (HELINA) in Gaborone, highlighting the theme โBuilding Sustainable and Resilient Client-Centred Health Informatics Systems for Health Equity in Africa.โ He emphasized Botswanaโs progress in digital health through systems like DHIS2, IPMS, and mobile health tools, which proved vital during COVID-19.
He noted remaining challenges such as interoperability, data privacy, equitable access, workforce capacity, and financing, urging collaboration to address them. The assistant minister announced plans for a National Health Insurance to ensure universal healthcare, stressing the role of digitalization. He encouraged delegates to share ideas, build partnerships, and enjoy Botswanaโs culture, before officially declaring the conference open.
