The Umbilical Cord

Had you seen one before your own baby?🤔
Did you know what to do with it?😮
Were you given instructions on how to take care of it?🥴

The answer to these questions for the majority of first time parents here in Botswana is No! 😲

It’s really not something to be afraid of (although it may look kind of ugly🤢) there are no nerves in it so it won’t hurt your baby 👶🏽

It will usually fall off between 5-15 days after baby is born. The main thing is to keep it clean and dry and you can do this by just using cotton wool and water (there is no need to use surgical spirits which is given out here when you are discharged from hospital)
You can also fold down the nappy under the cord, this is so the clamp doesn’t squash into babies skin.

Some cultures believe you should not bath the baby until the umbilical cord falls off, this is probably because the drier it is the quicker it will fall off. If you want you can sponge bath the baby until it falls off but don’t worry if it gets wet just dry it.

On the odd occasion it may get infected, you will notice it red or swollen in and around the cord and there can be a foul smell. If you notice this please consult your pediatrician.

🌟Join us GOING GOLD!!!🌟

September is Children’s Cancer Awareness Month and we want to raise as much awareness again this year.

Last year we raised over 5000pula and with your help and support we want to beat that this year , the money raised goes directly to children and families in our community affected by Childhood Cancer.

We are making it easier for you this year. Each Wednesday we would like you to walk or run 3k in memory of the 300,000 children globally who are diagnosed with Cancer each year.

Please donate 100pula or more to support these children and families here in Botswana.

🌟Together we can make a difference 🌟

It’s World Breastfeeding Awareness Week and this year the theme is Protect Breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding can be amazing, difficult, rewarding, painful, easy, hard, beautiful but more importantly it’s different for everyone. One can feel elated for feeding their child and a failure if it doesn’t work out. Ultimately everyone has a choice but what we want to do is support every family with that choice.
Getting the right support can be a game changer for breastfeeding.
Unfortunately in Botswana we are lacking in this area.
Planning can also help, chat with your friends and family and create a circle of support you know you can reach out to.
Breastfeeding can be a trigger for those who chose not to feed or had difficulties with it, let’s be mindful and supportive of everyone 🥰
