UNDERSTANDING EARWAX (Cerumen)
Earwax is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It has several important functions:
1. Protects the ear from dust, bacteria, and foreign particles.
2. Lubricates the ear canal, preventing dryness and itching.
3. Self-cleaning - Normally, earwax dries up and falls out on its own through jaw movements (chewing, talking).
When Should You Clean Your Ears?
Most people don't need frequent ear cleaning. However, you may need intervention if you experience:
1. Excessive earwax buildup (blockage, muffled hearing).
2. Ear discomfort, itching, or pain.
3. Water trapped in the ear (after swimming/showering).
4. Visible wax blocking the ear canal.
Warning:If you have severe pain, discharge, or sudden hearing loss, see a doctor—do not attempt self-cleaning!
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical help if you have:
1. Severe ear pain or bleeding.
2. Sudden hearing loss or ringing (tinnitus).
3. Persistent wax blockage after home care.
4. Signs of infection (discharge, foul odor, fever).
A doctor can safely remove wax using micro-suction or specialized tools.
