Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to sun protection, not all SPFs work the same way — but both play a vital role in keeping your skin safe.

🔹 Chemical SPF
• Absorbs UV rays and converts them into a small amount of heat, preventing damage to deeper skin layers.
• Most chemical filters don’t leave a white cast, making them ideal for daily wear.
🔹 Mineral SPF
• Uses zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to reflect and scatter UV rays before they reach the skin.
• Can leave a slight cast, but is often preferred for sensitive, post-procedure, or infant skin due to minimal absorption.

How to Choose
Both chemical and mineral UV filters undergo extensive safety and efficacy testing before approval for cosmetic use.
Many modern sunscreens now use hybrid formulations, combining both types to deliver:
-Broader protection
-Lighter texture
-Improved comfort and cosmetic feel — even at higher SPF ratings.

The best sunscreen is the one you’ll love — and use every day. 🤌

Your Complete Routine for Dry & Dehydrated Skin

Hydration is not just about what you put on your skin — it’s about how you layer and protect it, morning and night. Here’s a routine designed to restore water balance, reinforce the barrier, and keep skin comfortable throughout the day.

Morning Routine
1. Cleanse – Facial Cleanser
Gentle foaming with mild salicylic acid balanced by soothing ingredients. Tip: always use lukewarm water, never hot.
2. Serum – Intense HA Serum
Apply to slightly damp skin for better absorption and maximum hydration.
3. Moisturiser – Moisture Control Light
A silky hydrator that locks in moisture without feeling greasy — ideal for daytime wear.
4. SPF – Solar Advanced SPF 30
Daily protection that helps maintain hydration while defending skin. Lightweight, perfect under makeup, with medium protection and moisture support.

Evening Routine
1. Cleanse – Facial Cleanser
Double cleanse to remove makeup, sunscreen and impurities.
2. Exfoliate (2–3× per week) – Refine Foliant
Smooths, brightens, and clears the way for deeper hydration. Always follow with a rich serum and moisturiser, ideally topped with an occlusive cream at night.
3. Serum – Intense HA Serum
Apply after exfoliation or cleansing to restore hydration.
4. Moisturiser – Moisture Control Ultra
Rich and nourishing, designed for skin that needs intensive overnight support.
5. Mask (1–2× per week)
– Hydra-Derm HA Mask overnight for an intensive moisture boost
– Dermal Reconstitution Mask for barrier recovery and soothing relief

Pro Tips: Exfoliating When Skin is Dry or Dehydrated
• Start slow: 1–2× per week and monitor for tightness, flaking or irritation.
• Don’t layer too many strong actives in one night (exfoliants + retinol + acids).
• Use lukewarm water — hot water strips essential moisture.
• Always moisturise right after exfoliation while skin is slightly damp, and lock it in with a rich cream overnight.
• SPF is non-negotiable — exfoliation makes skin more UV-sensitive.
• Patch test new products, especially if your barrier feels compromised.

Clear. Hydrate. Protect. Repair. That’s the key to keeping dry and dehydrated skin healthy, supple, and resilient.

Exfoliation is an essential strategy to treating both dry skin as well as dehydration.

1. Dry Skin (Lipid Deficient):
• Barrier Renewal: Dry skin often develops retention hyperkeratosis—a buildup of corneocytes (dead cells) in the stratum corneum because natural desquamation slows when the lipid matrix is scarce.
• Benefit of Exfoliation:
Gentle chemical exfoliants (like lactic acid or polyhydroxy acids) loosen the corneodesmosomes holding dead cells together, helping the barrier shed properly.
This allows moisturisers and lipid-rich emollients (ceramides, plant oils) to pe*****te more evenly. For dry skin, gentle exfoliation is recommended.

2. On Dehydrated Skin (Lack of Water):
• Barrier Permeability & TEWL: Dehydrated skin often shows a compacted stratum corneum that impedes pe*******on of humectants while simultaneously losing water through increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
• Benefit of Exfoliation:
– Mild exfoliation removes the hardened outer layer, increasing the skin’s permeability coefficient, so humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerine can reach deeper layers of the epidermis.
– By reducing the layer of desiccated corneocytes, it also improves light reflectance, so skin looks less dull.

Always follow exfoliation with moisturisers or masks that contain humectants and lipid-rich emollients.

Bottom line: Exfoliation acts like controlled “spring cleaning,” removing excess dead cells so moisture and lipids can do their job, provided it’s gentle and paired with barrier-supportive hydration.

Myth or Fact?
You can’t be dry and dehydrated at the same time.

This is a myth. You absolutely can.

Dry skin is an inherent skin type marked by sebaceous hypofunction (low sebum output) that compromises the lipid matrix of the stratum corneum. This loss of barrier lipids leads to xerosis, characterized by rough texture, flaking, and increased cutaneous sensitivity.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is an acquired condition of epidermal water deficit. It occurs when the natural moisturising factor (NMF) is depleted or transepidermal water loss (TEWL) rises, leaving the skin tight, dull, and prone to accentuated fine lines.

Because these mechanisms can coexist, skin may simultaneously lack both intercellular lipids and intracorneal water. The visible result is a combination of roughness, flaking, and sensitivity from dryness, alongside the tightness, lacklustre tone, and fine “dehydration lines” of water loss.

Why this matters?

To restore balance, your routine should include products that target each concern:

• For dryness (oil deficiency): look for nourishing, lipid-rich creams and barrier-supporting ingredients.

• For dehydration (water deficiency): choose hydrating serums, humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid, and formulations that help the skin hold on to moisture.

Your skin deserves support on both fronts — because one without the other won’t fully solve the problem.

— Try the Pinch Test to Check for Dehydration!

A quick way to check your skin’s hydration levels is the simple pinch test (skin turgor test):

1. Choose a site: Common spots are the back of the hand, the inner forearm, or the lower cheek if you’re checking facial skin.

2. Gently pinch: Use your thumb and forefinger to lift a small fold of skin.

3. Observe the return: Release and watch how quickly the skin flattens.

If your skin snaps back quickly: it’s likely well hydrated - good skin turgor.

If it takes a moment to return, or looks creased wrinkled: could indicate reduced intercellular water in the dermis, indicating your skin may be dehydrated.

Remember - dehydration is a skin condition (lack of water), not a skin type. Supporting your skin with humectant ingredients can make all the difference.
