BoMRA ACHIEVES ISO/IEC 17025:2017 ACCREDITATION, MARKING A MAJOR MILESTONE IN ADVANCING REGULATORY EXCELLENCE

The Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA) is proud to announce that its National Quality Control Laboratory has been awarded the internationally recognized ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation by the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service (SADCAS). This follows a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of BoMRA’s laboratory systems, technical competence, and operational processes.

This achievement represents a momentous milestone in BoMRA’s continued commitment to excellence in regulatory science and laboratory quality assurance. The accreditation confirms that the Authority’s laboratory meets global standards for accuracy, reliability, and impartiality in testing strengthening its role in safeguarding public health.

“This accreditation strengthens our credibility, enhances trust among our stakeholders, and reinforces the quality and reliability of our scientific work,” said Dr. Seima Dijeng, Chief Executive Officer of BoMRA. “It is a milestone that positions the Authority firmly on the path toward greater institutional maturity. Indeed, BoMRA is on an active journey towards achieving WHO Maturity Level 3 status, and this accomplishment serves as a major step forward. We are building robust systems, strengthening governance, and ensuring that our regulatory processes meet international benchmarks.”

In applauding BoMRA for this achievement, Ms. Christine Gadzikwa, Chief Executive Officer of SADCAS, highlighted the significance of this accreditation for both Botswana and the region. She stated, “We congratulate BoMRA for meeting the stringent requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017. This accreditation affirms the laboratory’s technical competence and commitment to quality. For SADCAS, it is always a proud moment to support national regulatory systems in strengthening the quality infrastructure necessary to protect public health. We look forward to continued collaboration as BoMRA expands its testing capabilities and upholds the highest standards of laboratory practice.”

The Ministry of Health also commended BoMRA for this major advancement. Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, Dr. Rex Segadimo said, “We congratulate BoMRA on this exceptional achievement. Ensuring that our national regulatory authority meets international standards is vital for the protection of public health and the credibility of Botswana’s health system. This accreditation strengthens patient safety by giving assurance of the quality and reliability of the test results issued by the BoMRA laboratory.

This SADCAS accreditation adds significant momentum to BoMRA’s broader goal of achieving WHO Maturity Level 3 and beyond, strengthening its role as a trusted regulatory authority in the region and across the continent. Most importantly, it translates into safer, higher-quality health products for every patient in Botswana. Our Laboratory has officially attained ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation status .This is a landmark achievement demonstrates our commitment to excellence, reliability in testing and quality assurance.

The official handover ceremony was graced by Dr. Rex Kealibile Segadimo the Secretary for Specialised Health Care representing the of Health, Dr.Juliet Bataringaya from World Health Organization Botswana, Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service CEO Ms Christine Gadzikwa as well as distinguished representatives from key stakeholders, including the Botswana Police Service and the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BoBS)

This achievement affirms our dedication to the highest standards of excellence and serves as proof that our laboratory operates at internationally recognized levels, ensuring accuracy, credibility, and trust in every result we deliver.

As we conclude our 3-day Department of Licensing and Enforcement engagement, BoMRA extends its sincere appreciation to our key strategic partners, Botswana Police Service, Botswana Unified Revenue Service - BURS, Ministry of Health,Botswana Port Health, medical product distributors, and World Health Organization Botswana for their invaluable support and participation.

Over the past three days, we worked together to:
• Strengthen our collective capacity to identify substandard, falsified, and unauthorised medical products.
• Enhance coordination and information-sharing, ensuring quicker, more effective action across agencies.
• Improve response mechanisms for reporting, seizing, and handling suspected products.
• Deepen understanding of BoMRA’s regulatory framework, importation requirements, and licensing obligations.
• Promote a culture of vigilance and shared responsibility in safeguarding Botswana’s health sector.

World AIDS Day Commemoration ( Princess Marina Hospital)

This morning, we observed a moment of silence to remember our loved ones lost to HIV.

"This year's message is about overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response, acknowledging that while progress has been made, the global response is facing a funding crisis and otherchallenges that threaten to undo years of work."

In his remarks, Princess Marina Hospital Superintendent Dr. Machacha reminded us that AIDS is slowly becoming the leading causes of death in Botswana. He cautioned that patients continue to lose their lives due to negligence, interruptions in HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy), and the persistent stigma surrounding HIV, even among some health practitioners these issues are are rampant.

With a heavy heart, Dr Machacha warned that these challenges risk undermining the progress and achievements we have made in the fight against HIV/AIDS....

BoMRA wishes to extend sincere gratitude to all stakeholders, partners, and individuals who played a role in the planning and facilitation of the recent nationwide awarenss campaign.
