Sport for Life 2025: Taking Quality Sport to Secluded & Underserved Areas

In 2025, the Sport for Life โ€“ Secluded Areas Replication Programme made a powerful impact across Botswana, proving that quality sport education can reach every corner of the country ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ผ

Through 11 completed trainings, the programme empowered youth leaders, volunteers, and coaches to use sport as a tool for life skills development, inclusion, and community building.

๐Ÿ“ Where we worked

Sport for Life courses were delivered in Lerala, Matsiloje, Nata, Kasane, Maun, Shakawe, Charles Hill, Tsabong, Oliphants, and Mahalapye, alongside a Train the Trainer (TTT) course in Kasaneโ€”ensuring sustainability beyond the programme.

๐ŸŽฏ 2025 Impact at a Glance

โœ” 10 Sport for Life courses delivered
โœ” 191 participants trained (96% of target)
โœ” 1,725 children reached through multi-sport activities
โœ” 37% female participation, advancing gender inclusion
โœ” Participation of persons living with disabilities
โœ” 1 Train the Trainer course completed to strengthen local capacity

๐Ÿค Building for the Future

The TTT course created a pool of local trainers who will continue delivering courses, mentoring volunteers, and supporting schools and community sport programmesโ€”making Sport for Life a long-term community resource.

โœจ Looking Ahead to 2026

With stronger systems, trained local facilitators, and lessons learned from 2025, Sport for Life is well positioned to make 2026 even more impactful. The foundation has been laid to reach more communities, empower more leaders, and create greater opportunities for children across Botswana.

๐Ÿ… More Than Sport

Sport for Life is about people, opportunity, inclusion, and life skills. As we build on the successes of 2025, the journey continuesโ€”sport for life, and life through sport.

EQUESTRIAN SPOTLIGHT | TEAM BOTSWANA ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ผ๐ŸŽ

Kayla Smitโ€™s journey in equestrian sport is a powerful story of natural talent, dedication and growth.

Kayla grew up riding from a young age on her family farm in Francistown, where her passion for horses was nurtured through everyday riding rather than formal training. Until recently, she had only ridden on the farm, without any structured lessons โ€” a reminder that great talent can be found in the most humble settings.

She has only recently begun competing in Endurance Riding and is currently in her novice phase, a mandatory development stage for all endurance riders. This phase requires riders to complete two 40km rides and two 80km rides at a restricted speed limit of 16km/h, allowing athletes to gradually learn competition demands while prioritising horse welfare and rider education.

Before todayโ€™s race, Kayla had successfully completed one 20km ride and one 40km ride. With her outstanding performance at the African Youth Games, she has now completed her second 40km ride โ€” a major milestone in her endurance riding journey.

Her preparation towards the Games included guided 10km training rides across different terrains, helping her develop the ability to read the track and maintain a consistent, controlled pace. She also received arena-based flatwork coaching to improve her self-carriage, centre of gravity and overall riding technique.

Kaylaโ€™s rise from farm riding to continental competition highlights her exceptional talent and determination. Her story serves as an inspiration to many young Batswana ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ผ who ride at cattle posts or on farms, showing that with guidance, discipline and opportunity, they too can reach the highest levels of sport.

A true example of resilience, potential and the power of grassroots talent.
