Botswana Kidney Society

Botswana Kidney Society To advocate for all members of the community who are challenged with kidney and related illness for improved health care.

Botswana kidney society was set up as a response to the plight to people living with kidney illness. The lack of advocacy organization in Botswana compounds the challenges of people living with kidney illness who are also in need for dialysis treatment. Patients who need dialysis treatment are highly disadvantaged by the fact that there is only 2 dialysis centers country wide. Such centers are situated in Gaborone and Francistown. There is currently no organization which coordinates, advocate and represents the interests of such patients. From the above justification, there is urgent need for a national organization which will advocate and represent kidney patients’ country wide. We currently have 30 patients registered with the society. Our mandate is to reach all kidney patients country wide and make our services available to them. The society’s mandate is to mobilize resources and engage other stakeholders for assistance of kidney patients.

WHATS KILLING YOUR KIDNEY?

A Ghanaian doctor in the United States sent this to help everyone. Please read and take care of yourself. Dr. Okyere.

The speed at which young people suffer from kidney disease is alarming.

★SO HERE ARE THE 6 MAIN CAUSES OF KIDNEY DISEASE:

1. Delay going to the bathroom. Keeping your urine in your bladder too long is a bad idea. A full bladder can cause bladder damage. The urine left in the bladder multiplies the bacteria quickly. Once the urine returns to the ureter and kidneys, toxic substances can lead to kidney infections, then urinary infections, then nephritis and even uremia. When nature calls - do it as soon as possible.

2. Eat too much salt. You should not eat more than 5.8 grams of salt a day.

3. Eat too much meat. Too much protein in your diet is harmful to your kidneys. Protein digestion produces ammonia, a very destructive toxin for the kidneys. More meat equals more kidney damage.

4. Drink too much caffeine. Caffeine is a component of many sodas and soft drinks. This increases your blood pressure and your kidneys begin to suffer. So you should reduce the amount of coke you drink every day.

5.Drink enough warm water. Our kidneys must be well hydrated to perform their duties well. If we do not drink enough, the toxins can begin to accumulate in the blood because there is not enough fluid to drain them through the kidneys. Drink more than 10 glasses of water a day. There is an easy way to check if you're drinking enough water: look at the color of your urine; the lighter the color, the better.

6. Late treatment. Treat all your health problems early and have your health checked regularly. Let us help ... God will protect you and your family against all diseases this year.

In the midst of the the Corona Virus mayhem, I will like to call for your attention‼️. Today marks the International Kidney Day.

We live very busy schedules and tend to forget the very little things that keep us going. Kidney failure is a silent killer that claims almost 5-10million lives annually. WHO expects the statistics to double by 2030.

It is mainly caused by our environments, lifestyle and pre existing conditions for instance hypertension, diabetes, cancer or even HIV.

Like the Corona Virus, there is no established cure for Kidney diseases as of today. However, early detection of acute or chronic kidney failure may help slow the worsening kidney function and hopefully avert the disease.

Who knows you might be living on one Kidney right now! Watch your salt intake, water levels, Alcohol consumption as well as those Lemon water we love so much ladies.

Take charge of your health and routinely examine your kidney function. The treatment in Botswana has became an economic burden as the government has assumed all costs related to the treatment that is dialysis and catheter implantation.
