Age and important medical check ups.
*30 or younger two to three yearly medical check ups. Ladies must have regular Pap smears
*From 30 to 40 yearly medical reviews. This is when most high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression start. Often the doctor can make an early discovery of existing problems which can prevent or delay future complications or early (premature) death. Ladies can discuss with their doctors about breast cancer screening and or mammograph planning.
*50 and above should have frequent visits to their GPs. Cancer screening is highly recommended and gastro and colonoscopy is useful in both male and female groups.
*65 and above have higher incidences of illnesses and it may be important to get regular preventive vaccinations such as flu shots or even to prevent pneumococcal infection.
Healthy way of living, good nutrition and exercises cannot be overemphasized.

How do you know you have diabetes mellitus (sugar disease)?
Diabetes mellitus, abbreviated as DM may present as subtle symptoms that range from tiredness, thirstness, increased micturition especially at night, unplanned weight loss, blurred vision, poor wound healing or repeated yeast infection.
Often the disease has been there for a number of years. DM comes in when there is failure of your body to metabolise sugar. This is due to lack of insulin or insulin resistance as in obesity or both.
Knowing that you have the disease early is extremely important as you can save the damages that result from long term accumulation of sugar in the blood. The damages range from nerve ending changes that result in numbness, tingling or burning sensation, to small capillary changes which may result in visual impairment or blindness, to the teeth causing dental decay or rotten teeth that easily fall out, to vascular system causing poor blood circulation in the lower legs/feet - resulting into gangrene, poor healing wounds which end up into amputation.
Visit your doctor for further check up if you have any of the above mentioned symptoms or if you are between 40 and 70 years old.

Today I want to talk about menopause. Menopause is a physiological condition that affects ageing women from 45 years and above. The condition can begin at earlier age and is defined as the absence of menstruation for a period of 12 months or more.
Menopause comes in gradually and the terms climacterium or premenopausal and lately menopause transition are used for the early stages.
During this period most women experience the following symptoms:
- Hot flashes or flushes (most common)
- Insomnia (lack of sleep) or difficulty sleeping
- Headache with no obvious cause
- Weight gain and bloating (feeling of abdominal fullness)
- Mood changes or irrtability. Anger for no obvious reason
- Painful breasts as if pregnant
- Depression
- Irregular me**es
These symptoms can begin several years up to 5 years before menopause settles.

Are you sweating too much at night? Well, that can be caused by excessive heat around you. Hot temperatures caused by a warm environment, overdressing, warm covers etc.
Some other causes include anxiety, low blood sugar, thyroid disease, cancer somewhere, infectious diseases, taking certain medications, menopause, andropause and more. So see a doctor near you if you are concerned.
