World Kidney Day 2026

It was a wonderful moment of joining the world to commemorate World Kidney Day 2026 at Boseja Kgotla in Maun.

This year's commemoration theme was "Kidney Health For All: Caring For People, Protecting the Planet".

The community came in large numbers to get the best of the event. An awareness of kidney health and kidney diseases was raised and the community was given free health screening.

As we continue raising the awareness about kidney health, your part is to take the message home, maintain a healthy lifestyle and do regular health screening.

Many are at risk of developing kidney diseases but early detection can save lives.

Join us as we commemorate World Kidney Day 2026 at Boseja Kgotla in Maun on Thursday 12 March 2026. This year's commemoration theme is "Kidney Health For All: Caring for People, protecting the Planet".

Come and learn about kidney and kidney diseases and non-communicable diseases.

On that Wednesday morning of the 1st August 2023, the team comprising a staff complement of four (4) set foot in what was then the Oncology / Renal Unit of Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital (LIIMH), to start works on what has turned out to be the PCKD-Maun we see today, turning a vision into a reality. Today marks exactly two (years) since PCKD-Maun started operations in Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital in Maun.

The management of PCKD takes pride and celebrates all those that have contributed in making PCKD-Maun a centre of excellence it has turned out to be, anticipating an even brighter future of growth and societal impact. Special recognition for our patients, who have brought us to this place and continue to challenge us to be a better version of ourselves.

STAKEHOLDERS MEETING

This morning Pholong Center for Kidney Diseases and Dialysis (PCKD) had a successful stakeholders meeting with The Department of Social and Community Development (S&CD) in the North West District Council in Maun.

The objective of this engagement meeting was to have open communication, share challenges and come up with ideas that can help serve our customers better. The target group of this meeting was all social workers because on a daily basis we assist the same customers.

PCKD Medical Officer ,Dr Larona Molatlhegi gave a presentation on The Reality of Kidney Failure. Dr Molatlhegi's presentation covered among other things ,the functions of a kidney,what is kidney injury, risk factors of kidney failure, the treatment options available and challenges of a kidney failure patient.

The S&CD has three departments namely Social Welfare,Community Development and Home Economics and all the three departments were represented. The team from S&CD was led by Principal Social Welfare Officer ,Ms Chawapiwa Mosaunyana who appreciated PCKD for having initiated this important meeting. She said the meeting helps them first as service providers to understand what they are dealing with and pointed out that as social workers they offer psychosocial support hence they also need to be informed.

PCKD Unit Manager Mr Oratile Lubinda appreciated all social workers for the great work they are doing with assisting customers to adhere to their treatment. Mr Lubinda indicated that most of their customers are helped monthly by the council.He described S&CD to be a critical stakeholder hence they planned on this engagement as it enhances alignment towards achieving a shared goal.

Social workers appreciated this meeting and called for more of this engagement. They openly shared the challenges they encounter which include outdated policies which sometimes slow the enrollment process of new clients in their programs.

The meeting fosters collaboration and enhances more successful outcomes. It is in the meeting that PCKD and S&CD agreed in one accord to work together and to keep engaging further.

Our team is attending an ongoing two (2) days Renal Symposium 2025 brought by NIPRO MEDICAL South Africa in collaboration with Nephrology Society of Botswana (NesBo) .

A well-packed training commenced yesterday 20 June 2025 at Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital in Gaborone.

We offered free screening and health education to the community as a way of commemorating World Hypertension Day on Saturday 17 May 2025.

This year 's day was commemorated under the theme "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer."

Hypertension (High blood pressure) is a silent killer. It is a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney failure,dementia, and many other conditions.

It is essential to check and know your blood pressure.

Many people have hypertension without knowing it but once properly diagnosed it can be treated and controlled.

A simple blood pressure check can save your life.
