Midwives from the Greater Gaborone District Health Management Team (DHMT) recently underwent training to enhance their skills in providing youth-friendly services, with a particular focus on adolescent girls and young women (AGYWs) accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and maternity services. The two-day training, held from May 7-8, 2025, at Oasis Motel in Gaborone, aimed to empower midwives with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver client-centered care, especially for pregnant and breastfeeding young women.
The training, which brought together various key stakeholders, was graced by representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Botswana Police Service, Baylor, Bummhi, Sentebale, and UNICEF. These stakeholders played a crucial role in ensuring that midwives received comprehensive insights into the needs, expectations, and challenges faced by AGYWs in their care.
One of the training highlights was a session facilitated by the Botswana Police Service, which focused on their critical role in handling Gender-Based Violence (GBV), defilement, and case management. The BPS team educated midwives on how to support GBV victims, emphasizing evidence collection and proper documentation in medical reportsโan essential aspect of supporting survivors legally and medically.
In addition to GBV training, various stakeholders presented on the services they offer to adolescent girls and young women (AGYWs), providing midwives with a broader understanding of available resources and referral networks beyond health facilities. Ms. Connie Malesela from Bummhi shared insights on the services they offer to AGYWs, emphasizing that while the services themselves remain consistent, the approach to delivering these services is what requires adjustment. She explained that Bummhi operates within clinics, providing a range of services including PrEP, DREAMS, STI screening and treatment, family planning commodities, and post-GBV care, among others.
The training aimed to promote evidence-based, targeted, and client-centered services for AGYWs, recognizing their unique needs and ensuring that midwives can deliver compassionate, non-judgmental care. Participants also gained clarity on the integrated and coherent service package for AGYWs, which all stakeholders are expected to adhere to at all levels.
