👉 In recent years, Japan has officially discontinued the use of dental amalgam restorations—a material traditionally composed of approximately 50% elemental mercury mixed with silver, tin, and copper.

This significant public health decision aligns with growing global concerns about the toxicological impact of mercury on both human health and the environment

🚹One missing tooth is never “just one tooth.”
The moment a tooth is lost, your entire mouth begins to change—often silently, but with serious consequences.

When the gap is left unfilled, neighboring teeth drift and tilt into the empty space. This creates misalignment, uneven spacing, and difficulty in cleaning, which allows food to get trapped and increases the risk of cavities and gum infection.

The opposing tooth in the upper jaw (or lower, depending on the lost tooth) also starts to move downward into the gap—a process called supereruption. This not only weakens the bite but can also disturb the natural balance of your jaw.

Over time, the bite changes strain the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), leading to jaw pain, clicking, or even headaches. Chewing efficiency drops, forcing other teeth to work harder, which may accelerate wear and damage.

Beneath the missing tooth, the jawbone begins to shrink because it no longer receives stimulation from chewing. As bone resorbs, facial support weakens, giving the face a sunken or aged appearance.

Worse still, untreated infections from trapped food and decayed neighboring teeth can spread beyond the mouth—contributing to systemic health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, or worsening existing medical conditions.

✅ The solution: Timely replacement with options like dental implants, bridges, or dentures. Restoring even one missing tooth preserves alignment, bite function, bone health, and overall well-being.

A dental cavity can become life-threatening.
This isn’t fearmongering—it’s a medical fact.

What many dismiss as “just a broken tooth” can become a direct pathway for bacteria to enter the body. Once a cavity reaches the pulp, harmful microbes can travel beyond the mouth—invading the jawbone, entering the bloodstream, and potentially causing severe conditions like sepsis or infective endocarditis—a dangerous inflammation of the heart’s inner lining.

What you see in this image isn’t just poor dental hygiene. It’s a reminder of what can happen when oral health is neglected. Tooth decay may start silently, but its consequences can be loud—and irreversible.

đŸŠ· Remember, a cavity is an active infection, an open wound inside the mouth. In its early stages, it may not cause pain—but once symptoms appear, the damage is already advanced.

📌 Oral health is not just about a beautiful smile. It’s directly linked to your overall health—and in some cases, even your survival.

Frequent exposure to soft drinks—whose pH typically ranges from 2.7 to 3.5—drives enamel demineralization because enamel begins to dissolve at pH 5.5 and below. Phosphoric acid (in colas) and citric acid (in fruit-flavored sodas) chelate calcium and phosphate ions from hydroxyapatite crystals, weakening the enamel’s structure. Over time, this erosion not only roughens the tooth surface but also predisposes the dentin to further decay and sensitivity . Regular, prolonged consumption without adequate remineralization from saliva or fluoride can lead to irreversible loss of tooth tissue and increased risk of cavities.

Despite modern advances in dentistry, dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic disease worldwide—even more common than asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study (Lancet, 2020), untreated dental caries in permanent teeth affects more than 2.5 billion people globally.
The culprit? A perfect storm of sugar, poor oral hygiene, biofilm (plaque), and time.

But here’s the breakthrough:
New research highlights targeted biofilm disruption and fluoride-based remineralization as the most effective strategies for prevention—especially in high-risk populations like children and the elderly.

Patient education, and early intervention remain our most powerful tools.
It’s not just about saving teeth—it’s about protecting systemic health.

MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR!!!

The Belize Softball Federation wishes to thank all those who contributed to the U-18 Girls National Team. Our first junior girls program was a resounding success. In their first time playing together, our girls were able to defeat a perennial container, Honduras, in mercy rule fashion. Though their youth and inexperience showed up at inopportune times later in the tournament, the girls showed steady improvement and growth in confidence throughout.

The junior program continues and preparation for next year starts today. We thank all or sponsors who gave those 22 young ladies an opportunity to compete at the international level and providing an experience they will never forget.

They had better beat us now because Belize Softball is Coming!!!
