Ministry of Health and Wellness Receives ICT Equipment to Strengthen Maternal and Child Health Services

Belize City, Belize, May 06, 2026 (PAHO) โ€“ Through the project, "Strengthening the EMTCT Strategy with Maternal and Child Health Services (MCH)," the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) received ten all-in-one desktop computers and one video projector to strengthen maternal and child health services.

Funded by the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, through the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), and implemented by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the project supported efforts to advance progress toward eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and Chagas disease across the Caribbean.

The donated equipment will directly support frontline health services by improving data management, strengthening surveillance, enhancing laboratory coordination, and helping healthcare providers deliver more efficient, timely, and integrated care for mothers and children.

By strengthening these critical areas, progress can be sustained in countries like Belize, which have already achieved EMTCT validation, while helping other countries move closer to this milestone.
The handover underscored the importance of partnership and shared commitment to ending preventable transmission of diseases and securing a healthier future for all.

About PAHO/WHO

Hand Hygiene Day is observed every year on May 5, providing an opportunity for countries to launch awareness campaigns that focus on the vital role of handwashing in preventing the transmission of infections and diseases.

Maintaining proper hand hygiene entails washing hands with soap and water for no less than 40 seconds or applying hand sanitizer when soap is not accessible for not less than 20 seconds.

This straightforward yet powerful practice can considerably lower the chances of contracting illnesses like colds, flu, and other more severe infections.

By emphasizing hand hygiene, individuals aid in fostering a healthier society, safeguarding themselves and others, and assisting in the prevention of outbreaks, which underscores its importance in daily routines of life.

In celebration of Hand Hygiene Day in Belize 2026, all health regions will showcase hand hygiene practices at health facilities among healthcare workers to improve their hand hygiene techniques through practical demonstrations.

During this long Labour Day weekend for the National Agriculture and Trade Show, remember: if you drink, donโ€™t drive.
Alcohol slows your reaction, affects your judgment, and puts lives at risk.

Plan ahead, choose a designated driver, call a taxi, or arrange a safe ride home. Enjoy the weekend, celebrate responsibly, and keep our roads safe.
"Donโ€™t Drink and Drive. Arrive Alive"
