THE FINAL SALUTE TO A PATRIOT
A gentle soul has gone home.
A man whose life’s work left a quiet but powerful imprint on Belize, passed away in Belmopan.
He is Ines Sanchez Sr., 92.
Sanchez was first and foremost a teacher. He was a steady hand who spent his years guiding generations of young Belizeans through the classroom and beyond.
In time, his leadership took him to the very top, serving as Chief Education Officer, where he helped shape national education policy.
But it is the flag, the very symbol of our country, that carries his most lasting legacy.
In 2014, during an interview with his granddaughter, journalist Courtney Weatherburne, Sanchez spoke humbly of the honor of co-designing the Belizean flag.
His voice was steady, his eyes filled with pride, as he described the process that led to a national emblem, one that flies high at every school, government building, and international gathering.
Today, we pause to remember a man who loved this country in quiet, enduring ways. A man of intellect, discipline, and pride. He leaves behind four children and a nation grateful for his service.
Funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic church in Belmopan City on Wednesday July 30th at 9:00am.Interment follows at the Memorial Garden cemetery in Belmopan City.
Rest well, Mr. Sanchez. The flag will fly a little heavier in the breeze without you.
