Day 4 focused on planting techniques, emphasizing the importance of planting seeds at the correct depth—generally 2–3 times the size of the seed. Tiny seeds like lettuce should be barely covered with soil, medium seeds like beans about 1–2 cm deep, and large seeds like corn around 3–5 cm deep. Planting too deeply may prevent seeds from sprouting, while planting too shallowly can cause them to dry out or wash away. Proper plant spacing is also crucial, as overcrowding can lead to competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients, resulting in weaker plants. For example, lettuce should be spaced about 6 inches apart, and tomatoes need 18–24 inches. When handling seedlings, it’s important to be gentle—always hold them by the leaves, not the stem or roots, and keep roots moist to prevent damage. During the day’s activity, students transplanted basil seedlings and planted seeds in raised beds, labelled them, watered the area, and applied a thin layer of mulch.
