Meet the Midwife 💫

I’m Nim Binning (she/her/hers), and I’m so excited to be part of the Fraser Birth Collaborative team and to support the wonderful families in this region. 💛

Before becoming a midwife, I completed my Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta and spent several years working in research, focusing on areas such as reproductive biology, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychology, and perinatal medicine. It was actually while working on one of these studies that I discovered midwifery — and truly, the rest is history!

One of my favourite parts of this work is being able to really get to know clients and their families, building trusting relationships and walking alongside them as they prepare to welcome their little ones. Supporting each family’s unique needs and preferences throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period is something I hold very close to my heart!

I also feel incredibly grateful to be one of only two Punjabi-speaking midwives (and maternity care providers) in Abbotsford, and I’m deeply passionate about supporting families who may benefit from additional language or communication support. I wholeheartedly strive to provide safe, holistic, evidence-based, and culturally competent care that takes into consideration each family’s unique needs and birthing preferences.

Outside of work, I absolutely love traveling, cooking up new recipes, exploring new restaurants, and I’m a full-on ice cream and fries connoisseur. 🍦🍟

I’m truly looking forward to welcoming and caring for all individuals and families seeking maternity support in this region, and I cannot wait to meet you! 🌿✨

Meet the Midwife: Katrina ✨

Before becoming a midwife, I worked in research, studying addiction medicine, psychedelic therapy for trauma, and the neuroscience of meditation. Closest to my heart was my work with youth and families.

It was through this work that I began to understand the importance of providing safe, accessible, and non-judgemental care.

I am deeply passionate about holding these threads in my midwifery practice. I was drawn to midwifery as I felt it aligned with my own ethics, in centering the belief that we are all experts of ourselves and of our own bodies, and that health care which respects this is a human right which we all deserve.

To be with families during pregnancy and birth is a deep honour I hold dear to my heart. I fell in love with the wonderful team at Fraser Birth and am so honoured to be joining them to care for the communities we serve.

I look forward to getting to know you!

Meet the Midwife, Simrat

My journey to midwifery feels like fate! I had no idea midwifery was a profession within Canada until my last year of my Bachelors of Sciences degree. I felt a pull to the profession instantly and it felt like the perfect fit for me!

Punjabi culture is all about going above and beyond to take care of your community and midwifery care embodies those same values. Officially being a midwife, I hope to bring the passion that brought me here, to serve the families we care for at Fraser Birth Collaborative.

Outside of work, I can be found in the garden huddled over my plants, learning new recipes to use up my veggies or scouring the library for a new read to teach me something new!

Folic acid (also known as folate) is a B-vitamin found in many foods, including dark green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, peas, dairy products, meat, eggs and grains.

This vitamin is particularly important to a baby’s health and development. Folic acid helps prevent some types of birth detects called neural tube defects.

Some women may have enough folic acid in their diets, so it is recommended that all women who are trying to get pregnant or might become pregnant, take supplemental folic acid. For most women, a daily dose of 0.4mg of folic acid per day throughout pregnancy and until breastfeeding ends is enough!
