🎉 Volunteer Spotlight: Behzad

This week, we’re celebrating Behzad—an incredible volunteer here at the Fraser Valley Addictions & Recovery Hub!

Behzad plays an important role in our food program by helping deliver groceries directly to homes. His kindness, time, and steady dedication make a real difference, and we are truly grateful for his support.

Thank you, Behzad! 💛

🪑 International Overdose Awareness Day

Every day, lives are being lost to the toxic drug supply.

📍 In 2024, 2,253 people died in B.C.
🌍 Since 2016, 52,000 Canadians have died.

💔 It’s not just the stereotype — it’s parents, neighbours, and friends, many dying alone in their own homes.

This week we’re preparing for IOAD:

Dropping off diapers & baby wash detergent to support SARA for Women in Abbotsford.

Welcoming S.T.O.R.M. into our clinic every Tuesday to connect with community through outreach & peer support.

Setting out a chair in solidarity with loved ones we’ve lost.

✨ We are also so grateful to have been nominated by Starbucks employees in Maple Ridge and awarded funding from the Starbucks Foundation Charitable Fund, held at Vancouver Foundation. This support helps us bring warmth and comfort with a cup of coffee and a meal to those in need in Maple Ridge.

✨ Success Story: Meet Thomas ✨

When Thomas first walked through our doors, he describes himself as “confused and lost.” After living with a career-ending back injury, he had faced discrimination in the healthcare system and felt dismissed in his need for opioid agonist treatment.

At Fraser Valley Addictions & Recovery Hub, Thomas says he finally felt welcomed with open arms. Here, his pain and his recovery journey were respected — not downplayed. “This place is like having a separate support system… not just a sense of support but a sense of purpose.”

Through treatment, Thomas has found the strength to return to college, support others in recovery, and rebuild his sense of identity. He describes our clinic as “food for the soul” — a place where staff treat him with love, compassion, and respect.

His advice for others in recovery? 💬 “Be open minded. You never know what to expect, but look at it as a positive support system. Having people in your corner cheering you on makes all the difference.”

Thomas’s journey reminds us of the power of community, compassion, and purpose in recovery. 💙

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight 🌟

Meet one of our amazing volunteers, Kara!

“I am an avid trail and long-distance runner, as well as a yogi! I have been practicing yoga every day since 2016 and I ran my first marathon in May.”

We are so inspired by the dedication and energy she brings both to her personal passions and to our community. Volunteers like Kara remind us that consistency, resilience, and heart make all the difference. 💙

Thank you for being part of our team and for sharing your journey with us!

This week at FVAR Hub! And learn about the event, “Dine With Us” 💜🍽️

📅 August 31 | ⏰ 10AM–2PM | 📍 Memorial Peace Park

Inspired by the Purple Chair Campaign’s question — “Who is missing from your table?” — this community meal is open to all. Together, we’ll honour the loved ones lost to drug poisoning and remind each other that no one is alone at our table.

Hosted by local non-profit S.T.O.R.M. in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day.

Success Story- Arjun 💙

Arjun’s journey began in our sober housing, where he faced challenges that could have stopped him in his tracks. Instead, he chose to push forward—overcoming obstacles, staying true to his promises to himself and his family, and building a future he can be proud of.

Today, Arjun is working full-time while also dedicating himself fully to his mind, body, and soul. He’s committed to getting back into shape, staying connected with his surroundings, and being an active part of his community.

His growth has been nothing short of inspiring.

We are so proud to see how far he’s come from where he started, and grateful for the way he now gives back—helping others see that recovery is not just possible, but worth fighting for.

Arjun, you are amazing. Keep on keeping on, and know that your journey inspires us all.

🌟 Giving Tuesday 🌟

This Giving Tuesday, we’re inviting you to volunteer with us through our Abbotsford Housing Program! 🏡💛

We’re getting our transitional homes ready for fall and would love your support. From mowing lawns and gardening with clients to painting, repairs, or organizing rooms for move-in—every effort helps create a safe, welcoming space for someone’s recovery journey.

If you’re in the Fraser Valley and want to give back in a hands-on way, this is the perfect chance to make a direct impact. ✨
