Happy Thanksgiving! There are so many things to be thankful for – family who care for us, a friend who always smiles, a ray of sun after a stormy day, or even just a warm bed to sleep in each night. Whether you enjoy a traditional turkey dinner or something else entirely, we hope your stomachs and hearts are full.

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever" (1 Chronicles 16:34)

Today is World Mental Health Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues and to mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. Mental illness is varied, and each person faces their own challenges. At Menno Place, we recognize the unique struggles our residents and staff can experience, and we work to provide support to those who are in need.

Here are some ways to support your mental health:
1. Practice self-care. Take time to engage in your self-care activities, such as walking, spending time with friends, meditation, or reading a book.
2. Ask for help. It can be challenging to speak up about mental health, as stigma and shame can keep us silent. However, you are not alone, and it is okay to ask for help. Here are some local services to use if you’re unsure of where to find support: https://buff.ly/jH3ora3
3. Build support networks. Turn to the people you love to provide you additional support. Having a strong community can be a huge benefit to mental wellbeing.
4. Be an ally. If you are able, be open to supporting those around you. Helping someone feel seen and heard can make a significant difference.
5. Be kind to yourself. Mental health is not consistent. Some days, weeks and months may be better than others. Healing takes time, and learning to care for your mental wellbeing can be a journey. Forgive yourself when you make mistakes.

On September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Menno Place remembers and recognizes that there are those who live, work and serve on our campus who have been directly or indirectly affected by the legacy of the Indian Residential School system. On this day each year, invited guests come to Menno Place to share their stories and experiences to help us remember and grow in our understanding.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is also known as Orange Shirt Day, and we encourage everyone to wear orange in recognition of the tragic and ongoing impact of Canada’s residential schools on Indigenous communities. By wearing an orange shirt on this day, we remember, honour and mourn the lives of children who never returned home.

We value this opportunity to reflect, learn, and seek healing together as a nation and on our campus-of-care.

Are you looking for resources to help you grow in your own understanding of how the Indian Residential School system impacted Indigenous Peoples? If you’re not sure where to begin, here are 6 steps to guide your journey:

1. LEARN about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and read their final report: https://buff.ly/57u3I3b

2. READ about residential school history: https://buff.ly/5B788mF

3. REFLECT on the stories of the victims and survivors: https://buff.ly/20ed7nk

4. LISTEN to MCC Canada's podcast: Honouring treaties with peacebuilding: https://buff.ly/EHL6w8V

5. WATCH stories of survivors: https://buff.ly/U80MzKG

Menno Place hosted Bridget Finley, MCC BC Indigenous Neighbours Coordinator who gave a presentation for all residents, families and staff to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Bridget spoke with us about what Jesus taught us about what it means to be a good neighbour in Matthew 22:39, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Bridget reminded us that the best way to understand and love our neighbors is to spend time with them, listening to who they are, where they have been and how they experience life. She reminded us that, “We tell our stories until we are healed.”
