To all the Matriarchs and Mare's who have held and nurtured others over a lifetime, thank you. Every female, (human and nonhuman) who have shown that you can be kind, and still hold boundaries, THANK YOU. The women who teach about the strength in softness and the power in kindness, thank you so much for those ones. The women, who have not just told me, but shown me that I matter, that we matter, I thank the universe for you, every single day ❤️

This is the beautiful Brenda Brown and her Matriarch Mare, Belle. They are where my journey, of healing intentionally among animals, first started. They changed my world, by teaching me about theirs. This photo summarizes them wonderfully, they are a great example of everything that is right in the world❤️ Mystic Waters Ranch

This guy was built for the snow! But unfortunately, a lot of vehicles, were not. We are calling another snow day here on the farm to ensure client care and safety. We hope you are finding as much joy in the snow as the children and animals are. Stay safe and stay warm ⛄️ ❤️

I showed up on Carla's doorstep almost 4 years ago asking to learn from her and her animal family. In these years, we have dreamed, created, collaborated, grown and deeply grieved so many of our animal friends together.

Carla, created Anam Cara as a space for both animals and humans to experience community, belonging and peace. She is the heart that pumps life into the vision of Anam Cara Farm and Learning Centre as well as Empowered by Horses and Friends. She is one of the most compassionate people I have ever had the pleasure to know and I can't imagine a life where our paths are not intertwined.

Happy birthday you are a light to every creature ( human and non-human) that surrounds you and we are all so grateful you exist. Celebrating you and everything you stand for today 🎉🌻❤️

“Animals make us human.”-Temple Grandin

Observation and curiosity is a powerful tool. The ability to observe your internal world with curiosity vs judgement is no easy task. In animal-assisted interventions we explore the art of observing both our internal and external environments from a place of curiosity. It is in our humanness to label things as good or bad. Chances are, even if we label the behaviour bad or harmful, it may have been developed as a way to keep the animal safe, help it regulate, or as a way to cope with a reality it could not flee. We also develop behaviours to help us with these same things. My invitation to you next time you want to stop a behaviour in yourself or another being, is to first ask, “What function is this behaviour serving?” and invite curiosity to the table🌻

Recognizing how grateful I am for all of the mentors, teachers, friends, researchers, writers, advocates and activists that have helped me understand both myself and my non-human friends more deeply. It is easy to get caught up in the notion that animals need to fit into our human world by projecting our perceptions and ways of thinking onto them. There are so many layers to what makes a being behave and think in the ways it does. All Behaviours serve a purpose. When we get curious about behaviours and the purpose they serve both for ourselves and our non-human friends, expectations start to shift and deeper connections start to form♥️

Saying goodbye to Pear♥️

When Pear was alive, every time I went to write about her, I felt I couldn’t capture just how special she really was in words. Now that she’s gone, it feels nearly impossible to summarize her essence and the impact she had in our worlds. But for her, I will try.

I’ve always felt her story was best told by her. In the ways she overcame her challenges and moved through the world with grace, innocence and bravery. In the way she welcomed the little ones into the field, the joy on their faces as she confidently hopped over singing to them. I’d watch their nervous systems calm and ease realizing they had both just made a unique new friend.

I watched her tell her story in the precious time the kids spent building trust and attuning to her needs while they searched for their own. She showed them there is a place for everyone in this world and we can all find our flock to accept us for who we are. I watched her curiously listen, gently tilting her head and cooing back as the children spoke softly to her about the challenges they themselves face. I watched empathy and compassion flow through their little hands as they fed her, stroked her and sat with her. I watched breathes deepen, smiles widen and shifts happen. They never asked her to be any different than what she was and she never asked that of them.

No matter how many losses we experience as a farmily, it never gets easier. And I hope it never does. Our mission is not to harden to loss but to accept grief as a hard and healthy part of love and life. Although our hearts will continue to ache, we are so grateful this little one hopped her way into our lives one year ago. She will always remain a dearly missed part of our farmily and flock.

Goodbye to our sweet little Pear, thank you for your gentle presence, beautiful voice and lessons in kindness. We miss you and will continue to find places to put the love you left with us♥️

Greg♥️

Greg is a beautiful English spot bun. On top of their sweet nature, English spots are also known for their playful, and inquisitive personalities. Greg checks all these boxes. It was clear he has been loved by someone before but through no fault of his own, was released into a park by his former guardian. Many think that domesticated bunnies can survive when released into parks or forests. Unlike their wild counter parts, this is not the case. This is a huge animal welfare issue that is overwhelming rabbit rescues.

After he was rescued, Greg sat in the shelter waiting to be adopted for over a year. A wonderful volunteer at connected with this sweet and social boy and brought him into ‘s care to help find him a home. And as his foster family, this is where we come in at Anam Cara Farm and Learning Center♥️

Greg is friendly, social, brave and hilariously curious. He enjoys human interaction and will hop right up to you while exploring. He currently lives with me and my two dogs and appears very curious and confident with the dogs (always supervised) so could potentially be adopted into a home with respectful kiddos as well as doggos.

Greg is not destructive ( although rabbits do require supervision to ensure this) and is great about using his litter box. He would do great as a free roam bunny in the home and will be such an awesome addition to a family. He is about 18 months and a strong healthy little guy. I think he would love a little bunny friend to zoomie, binkie and cuddle with♥️

Also very important to note, when he stands up, he looks like a little body builder in a skeleton themed bunny suit ( refer to 4th photo). This guy is ripped😂

Feel free to reach out if you’d like more info on Greg or how you can support in their mission to make the world a better and safer place for buns♥️ 🐰

Meet one of our co-therapists, Doughy.

Doughy is one of our most recent additions to the farmily and has quickly made herself right at home here. Shortly after she arrived, she made it very clear we were mistaken and she was clearly meant to be a house chicken. She waits at our door to come in and takes great joy in exploring everything the house has to offer. She even once tried to lay an egg in my dish rack (🤷‍♀️). After awhile she started using her beak to knock at the door of my house if we weren’t noticing her as quickly as she’d like. One time, Carla opened the door for a package and in walked Doughy with the FedEx guy. Sometimes, we even catch her peeking in the blinds to see what everyone’s up to.

Doughy refuses to be defined as ‘just a chicken’ and shows people we are so much more than the labels, boxes and diagnoses placed upon us.
Every animal we care for and partner with on the farm brings their own lessons, wisdom and laughter. Just as we see you as an individual worthy of understanding, care and compassion, we also see our animal friends with the same unique lens and celebrate individuality ♥️
