I am equally thrilled to introduce the second new therapist to our Expression team, please meet Lisa Frede. đź’— Here is a short expert from her bio:

“At the heart of my work is connection. I have always loved bringing people, ideas, and experiences together—introducing friends who feel like they were meant to meet, showing someone a beautiful place for the first time, or offering a new concept that suddenly lands. In therapy, the most meaningful connection of all is helping clients reconnect with themselves. I am especially drawn to supporting people in getting to know their inner “parts,” and I feel continually awed by the profound shifts that can unfold when those parts are met with curiosity, compassion, and care.

I am also a creator at heart, and I see therapy as a form of therapeutic artistry. Each session is a blank canvas—unpredictable, alive, and deeply personal. While I never know exactly how a session will unfold, I trust my training, experience, and intuition, and am confident that whatever emerges is exactly what is needed for that person in that moment.”

I am beyond thrilled to introduce you to one of the two new therapists to our team: Esther Groenhof. đź’•

Here is a short excerpt from her bio:

In the past 26 years as a mental health clinician, I have had the privilege of helping thousands of people at various ages and stages of life, get back on track and heal the pain that is driving their problematic symptoms.  I work from a strengths-based, person-centred and evidence-based approach, with a primary focus on being authentic and genuine.  We are all in this thing called life together.  And while I may have over 2 decades of clinical experience and training in various therapies, I believe the person of the therapist and the connection to the client at a human-to-human level is of utmost importance and makes the biggest difference in creating change. That, and a good sense of humour!

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is about promoting the rights and well-being of people with disabilities at every level of society and development, and raising awareness of the situation of disabled people in all aspects of life.

We are grateful for the work and advocacy that has been done by disability activists and organizers over the years and we recognize that there is still a long way to go to truly combat ableism in our society and all throughout the world. We work with many clients with visible and invisible disabilities and frequently see the impact that systemic barriers and lack of accessible and affordable disability support have on their wellbeing and quality of life.

We encourage you to reflect and learn more about the disability justice movement today and to think deeply about how you can advocate for more change and accessibility in the places where you have power and influence.

Words of wisdom from Julie ❤️

Are there parts of yourself you don't like? Some you keep hidden? I do! One of the things that has been helpful in my own therapeutic journey is getting to know the various parts of myself. Anger has been one of my parts I haven't liked for a long time. In some settings I worked hard to supress it and not make a scene. In other moments it took over and I would lash out in ways I didn't like. As I've gotten to know my anger, I've learned how it wants to protect me. Anger doesn't like it when I don't feel heard. As I started to understand how my anger worked for me, I began to have a relationship with it, I didn't need to fear it but I also needed to heal my relationship with it so we could work together. This has been a game changer. My healing relationship with anger recently came to light when a lamp was accidently knocked over. I was able to communicate calmly to my husband and kids that I needed to step away, I went to my room and discharged my anger into a pillow, and then came back and shared my frustrations in a way that didn't hurt others. I noticed how proud I felt to have been able to honour my anger but also my relationship with my family. What might be possible if you started a relationship with some of your harder to love parts?

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day to honour all of the transgender and gender nonconforming people whose lives have been lost due to anti-transgender violence. We recognize that transgender people of colour are disproportionately affected by violence toward members of the transgender community. Transphobia and white supremacy are intertwined and as therapists we see the effects of this on the people we work with regularly.

Transphobia is a societal, systemic problem and it is all of our responsibility to stop this. Here are some of the steps you can take to fight transphobia and support the trans community:
- Use the correct names and pronouns for transgender people
- Speak up when you hear someone tell a transphobic joke
- Be open about your support for the trans community

We are also reflecting today on the power of survival in the trans community. Transgender people have always been here and will always be here. The world is a better place with transgender and gender nonconforming people in it. We stand in support of and solidarity with the trans community.

Life can be as chaotic and crazy as we let it. We can say yes to everything despite not wanting to and allow it to deplete our energy, patience and sanity. When we openly invite the chaos in without boundaries or limits, it becomes more difficult to take on the unexpected chaotic moments of life.

As we enter into the holiday season, protect your quiet moments, understand that saying “no” is okay, leave the guilt behind and listen to your inner voice when it wants a break from it all. Remind yourself that limits are there to protect you, and that you are worth protecting. So, join the chaos and fun when you want, but decline it when it all feels too much. Balance is the key to keeping chaos in check.

Today we remember. We remember those who have sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of peace. We remember the families impacted by war; the loss of lives, livelihoods and life as they know it.

Today we remember how we are collectively impacted by war around the world. We remember so that we can continue to seek peace within ourselves and in our relationships with others.

Words of wisdom from Yoko ❤️

Where I live, it’s like we skipped fall altogether and went straight into winter. It’s been cold, my child has been home sick all week, and I hear half of the school is sick. When we are sick or physically injured, I can feel more compassionate toward others (or myself) for whatever legitimate reason they are sick/injured with. And yet, so much of our human experiences - the painful ones particularly - are invisible. Our emotions, invisible disabilities, mental health struggles… the list goes on. Are these “legitimate” enough to deserve compassion? When nobody else sees your pain, does your invisible pain deserve kindness? Absolutely. A wise client of mine shared with me the other day, “playing [sports] with [emotional] pain is the same as playing [sports] injured.” How can we tend to our inner experiences in the same way that we can with visible, physical pain/injuries? Kristin Neff , the Self Compassion guru, has easy short phrases to support you in any moment. I invite you to say these words to yourself with me today. 🧡
