Retirement Redo

Retirement Redo RetirementRedo was set up by Dale to help us thrive prior to and in retirement, improve health and regain our zest for life. Hi! Welcome to Retirement Redo!

Details available on: Active Boomers Private Group at:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1536432266706020/posts/1749359622079949 Have you ever laid in bed thinking about your retirement and said to yourself:

“I thought I’d feel better about my life by now.”

Or perhaps: “I thought I’d be better off than I am.”

Or: “I thought I would have travelled more or done more by now.”

Did you spend thirty or more years of your life saving and preparing for the day you no longer have to work, either at a job or in your own business? Did you hope to really start living once you are retired? Go on that dream vacation? Move to some beautiful location? Or take up that hobby or write that book you have put off for years? Or perhaps you found yourself in unplanned retirement, because of a job loss or a health condition, or burn out. Whether planned or unplanned, there is one thing certain, retirement at any age is one of the biggest life changes you have or will face. Retirement sits write up there with other major stressful events such as loss of a loved one, divorce and serious illness. I have a confession! I don’t do retirement well! In fact, I’ve tried it a few times and it wasn’t what I expected … if I even knew what to really expect. Here’s some quick lessons, you learn when you no longer have that job or your company to go to:

• Life can feel a little, or lot, empty or purposeless without your career or job goals.

• The empty nest starts to feel even emptier …

• Your once close connection with work friends and colleagues grows more distant or disappears.

• Your health and vitality may also be on the decline by now, unless you know how to revive them.

• Your pension cheques are a lot smaller than the pay cheques you got accustomed to receiving.

• Hard not to worry about money, with the cost of living shooting up while interest rates are low, stock markets volatile and pension cheques stagnant.

• Rising medical costs, don’t help one’s sense of financial security either!

• Without a regular morning routine and job or company to go to, your days can feel unfocused.

• And, sadly, we all have to deal with the loss of friends and family, who are also aging, getting ill, passing away …

Now that I have you feeling great about retirement (Not!), here’s the good news! Fortunately, life without your old job or business offers many benefits, which I will do my best to share with you on this page. You must have overcame many challenges in your life and, if you have made it this far, you have the strength and wisdom to continue to pursue your dreams. Just think, now you can live your life on your terms and on your timetable. You now have the freedom to follow your dreams. But you need a plan and strategies to overcome any obstacles, including financial, physical and emotional that might otherwise stand in your way. My posts to this page will be designed to help you revive your dreams or create new ones, no matter what age you are, no matter what health, financial or any other challenges you face and to help you build the life you desire and deserve. You may be wondering, who I am and what can I do for you? My career started as a daily newspaper reporter and editor. I learned how to observe life, interview people, focus on important information, consolidate facts and write about them in interesting and beneficial ways. I left my reporting career to get a business degree and went on to become a chartered accountant and a certified public accountant and spent most of my professional career as a management consultant, helping business owners and managers achieve their goals. I completed the first stage of my consulting career working oversees in one of the largest management consulting and accounting firms in the world. I returned to Canada and took up a new, but related career, as a financial advisor and stock broker, helping my clients save and prepare for retirement. After selling my investment practice, I tried retirement and we started travelling. We soon discovered that globe trotting wasn’t a sustainable life style on fixed pensions and unreliable markets. Therefore, I joined one of the largest providers of high quality senior living services and accommodation in North America as a community business director, where I saw first hand the challenges, financially, mentally and physically, all seniors face. Besides my professional career, I set and achieved many personal goals later in life, that some would consider pretty amazing. In my late fifties and sixties, being out of shape and overweight, I started running, first training for and completing 5 Km runs, then advancing to 10 Kms, then half marathons of 21 kms and finally completing several full marathons, of 42 Km. During this same period in my life, we moved to the Calgary area in Canada, close to the Rocky Mountains. I tried some mountain hikes, and learned that I love to hike and scramble up mountains, the higher the better! I’ve now summitted many of the mountains in the Banff and Lake Louise areas of Alberta, also the highest glaciated mountain in the continental U.S., Mount Rainer, and the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro. I accomplished all of this in my late 50s and 60s! I didn’t realize it at the time, but I had a serious heart condition, a malfunctioning value which when discovered had to be replaced. I firmly believe, that my careful but persistent training, conditioning and nutritional diet required to run marathons and climb mountains, helped save my life by strengthening my heart and cardio vascular system. I also proved to myself, it’s never too late to achieve your dreams! I realize most of you don’t plan to run marathons or climb mountains, but you likely do have many dreams that you have yet to accomplish, your bucket list, some of which you may have forgotten or given up on. On this page I share some of the strategies and info I used to re-invent my life after my non-retirement and regain my zest for life! I left my full-time position in the senior living industry a few years ago to start my next senior living adventure, which includes self-employment as a remote management consultant, expert personal and group coach and to devote time to sharing, on this page, ideas with seniors, or seniors to be, looking to live more and prosper! I hope you enjoy this virtual adventure and that it helps you thrive and revive your dreams!

The Big Four: Death, God, Religion, Spirit

Want to trigger an argument, or at least a lively debate? Bring up one of these topics! Death, God, Religion or Spirit (What Survives after Death of Your Body). We will leave politics out of it as it is not worth wasting your time or my time on, at least until the next election.

Part 1 - Death

Why would anyone argue about death? you might ask. Perhaps not directly, but Death, or the fear of it, is the underlying source, in this writer’s opinion, of our strongest emotions and opinions regarding God, Religion and Spirit, or what survives after physical Death.

When we use the term Death, we are referring to the physical end of life. And to be more specific, Death here means your death, or my death, not the neighbor’s cat, or even the neighbor’s. Of course, cats and neighbors die too, but that’s not what we want to focus on here.

This writer has been contemplating Death more than usual lately, because a dear close family member with cancer is in the hospital and is not expected to return home, at least not to his Earthly home.

Most of us likely avoid thinking too much about our Death, unless it occurs or is about to occur to ourselves, to somebody close to us, or to a celebrity.

Why do we react to the death of a celebrity, and ignore the thousands of other deaths that occur every day? Likely because it’s safer and more exciting to focus on lives that appear bigger and more distant. And our minds need to be selective in what they focus on to avoid overload and excessive stress. This, perhaps, explains why we don’t usually think about our own Death, unless we are depressed or have received news of our pending demise due to illness.

How do you feel about your own pending Death? It’s coming, maybe not today, but perhaps tomorrow, or next week, or maybe not for several decades, but there is no way to avoid it, excluding cryogenic options.

It’s normal to fear Death. It’s also normal to wonder what happens when we die.

Do you ever think about your Death? Write down a few words that best describe your feelings and thoughts about your Death. Please don’t read any further, until you have done this exercise.

… Please write down your feelings and thoughts about your Death, if you haven’t already.

Did you write down anything? If not, why not? There are no correct feelings or thoughts. Having a blank mind about Death is not uncommon. Being in denial or avoiding thinking about one’s Death, is a way to deal with fear of death.

Here are some of my own feelings and thoughts:

Mental numbness … not sure what I feel about my own Death.

A little sad, because my Death will be difficult and very sad for my children and spouse.

A little happy, because I do believe my Spirit will see my parents, siblings and close friends who have already made the transition.

Also, I’m curious about what else lies beyond for me. But in no hurry to find out …

What about my will, is it up-to-date? No.

What about funeral and post-funeral arrangements? Have I specified anything, anywhere? No.

Any other unfinished business to take care of before I die. Yes. Talk with and/or write to each family member and close friend, so they know how much they mean to me and why I am grateful for having had them in my life.

Likely a lot of other things to do or say before its too late!

Obvious, I have a lot more thinking and planning to do, regarding my own death!

Please re-read the above and make up your own To Do Before I Die List. If you have already done everything you want to and need to do before you die, Congratulations! Few people are fully prepared for their Death!

We cover the remaining three aspects of the Big Four, God, Religion and Spirit, in future posts in Active Boomers Private Group.

In ‘Part 2 – What or who is God? Where is God?” We examine possible answers to these questions based on historical and newer beliefs, as well as from a more science-based perspective.

In ‘Part 3 – Religion – What is it? What do some of the more prominent religions teach?’ We will address these questions.

In ‘Part 4 - Spirit, What Survives after Death of Your Body’ we will explore some scientific theories, common beliefs about life after death and Dale’s personal experiences.

If you have already seen this post before its because you are a follower of one of our other FB pages. We are re-posting it this time on all of our pages.

It recently dawned on me that many of you may not know what I, Dale, do for a living, if anything, so let me fill you in, if you care to read on. ... I am actually a certified professional life coach who uses biohacking techniques to further help my clients. Further down I share some details on how I help and support my clients.

But first, I will tell you, in case you don't already know, about my career and how I became a life coach.

My Professional Background

My early career started as a sports writer with a local daily newspaper. Due to my interest in business, I eventually transitioned into writing business news and columns. To improve my knowledge and understanding of business and computer systems, and since I was able to work evenings, I took university business and computer science classes during the day. After several challenging years, basically working nights and days, I obtained a degree.

After attaining my degree, I decided to become a Chartered Accountant because of the career opportunities it offered. After graduating, because of my studies in computer science, I soon found myself with a chartered accounting firm in charge of its data services department and helping clients convert from manual to digital systems. Due to my early successful experience working with client systems and my Chartered Accountant and later CPA qualifications, most of my career involved management consulting and senior management positions.

Fortunately, during my consulting career, I have had the opportunity to work within two of the largest auditing and management consulting firms in the world, Coopers & Lybrand (now Pricewaterhouse Coopers) in Canada and KPMG in the Middle East as well as a Chicago-based consulting firm that served clients across the U.S.A. and Canada.

Later in my career, when I returned to Canada from my international consulting position, I decided to tackle yet another challenging profession. I took all the required courses and examinations, to become a financial advisor and stockbroker, with one of the larger investment firms in North America.

My next step was to join another international investment firm where I could build my own practice and client base. I eventually sold my investment practice with the idea of retiring. I soon found out I am not good at retiring.

My varied career then took another turn, when I was offered a management position with one of the larger seniors’ accommodation organizations in North America. What was to be a short-term career move, turned out to be a seven-year adventure in seniors’ housing and management, before I attempted another crack at management consulting.

One powerful takeaway from my experience in seniors’ housing was that the transition into retirement for many is fraught with both health and mental challenges, and some people do much better at it than others. Residents who were active in their community or took an active interest in local events or world affairs seemed to thrive. Those residents who avoided interacting with others, except with their own family, appeared more fragile and didn’t seem to last as long in the community.

I remember one woman resident who became such an invalid, she would not even come out for meals, and expected them delivered to her room. Our policy was to encourage residents to attend meals in the dining room, to support social interaction and healthier lifestyles. Unfortunately, her obedient adult daughters continued to pander to her every wish, and brought food to her in bed. This particular resident became extremely overweight and got to the point she could no longer get out of bed and even required a bed pan in which to do her personal disposals. She eventually had to be moved to higher care, with little hope of a long, healthy or happy life.

My venture back into management consulting, where my impact was marginal at best, also taught me a valuable lesson. My heart was no longer in it. Also being dependent on the whims and wishes of a few major clients, only made matters worse.

However, my urge to interact with people, and discover ways to help and support them, never faded. It was at this point I started looking into the challenges, opportunities and freedom of personal coaching. After investigating the myriad of coaching options available, my head and heart knew that life coaching reinforced with biohacking techniques, both one-on-one and with groups, was the path I was meant to be on. It appears I was preparing most of my entire career for this. And finally, here I am!
Here's what I do as a certified professional life coach and biohacking coach:

Clarify Life Purpose, Goals and Plan:

I help my clients clarify their major purpose or what they want to accomplish during the remainder of their lives, set goals, break them down into smaller, actionable steps, and create a personalized plan to achieve their purpose.

Accountability and Support:

I provide ongoing support and encouragement, and when requested, I hold clients accountable for their commitments and progress.

Overcoming Obstacles:

I help my clients identify and overcome limiting beliefs, procrastination, and other challenges that may hinder their progress.

Building Confidence and Motivation:

By focusing on strengths and achievements, I help my clients build momentum to attain their goals and purpose while developing a positive mindset.

Skill Development:

I also teach my clients new skills, when required, such as time management, communication, or stress management, to support their personal and professional growth.

Specialized Areas:

As a biohacking coach, I help my clients increase their longevity, health and wellness using powerful techniques. Biohacking involves utilizing specific lifestyle changes, including better sleep strategies, breath work, diet, supplements and specific exercises guided by scientific data and emerging technologies to optimize health and fitness. Its benefits range from improved physical and mental well-being, enhanced memory and focus, and better moods to increased physical stamina and longevity.

“I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light.”
- Helen Keller

“The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, not the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when you discover that someone else believes in you and is willing to trust you with a friendship.”
- Ralph Wald Emerson

“In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.”
- Khalil Gibran

The concept of friendship is broad and complex and can mean different things to different people. We are bringing up this subject here, because it appropriately describes, as close as any word can, my view of the relationship I have, or hope to have, with each of you reading this post. Of course, most of us are not close friends, but there are many kinds of friendship, and my hope is to nurture the relationships we establish here so each of us feel some breath of friendship, however slight or fleeting.

It's been said that the key qualities of a good friendship include trustworthiness, supportiveness, honesty, empathy, respect, and the ability to listen actively and be non-judgmental. Also, a good friend is likely to be someone you enjoy spending time with and who makes you feel good about yourself. This is a pretty tall order, if not nearly impossible, for online friendships amongst people who have never met. However, it covers many of the ideals I will strive to meet from my side of our “friendship”.

At this point, this “friendship” is obviously one-sided, and that is OK from my point of view. It will be up to each of you, whether you want to engage in any communication to enhance this friendship, from your side.

Where am I going or what do I hope to achieve with this post? Well, at this point I have close to 1,000 followers and members on three pages I created and post on. My pages include
1. My personal page, https://www.facebook.com/dale.hackinen ,
2. My professional page https://www.facebook.com/RetirementRedo/ and
3. My private group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1536432266706020

Feel free to check any of the above pages. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing what motives, expectations or needs of any of my followers or members. Over the coming weeks, I plan to reach out via the above pages, to those of you who wish to become more engaged to learn more about your needs and expectations.

Below is a brief description or purpose of each of my pages.

My personal page is primarily intended for my friends and family to provide brief glimpses into what’s happened or currently going on in my life. Up to now, I’ve accepted friend requests from just about anyone, whether I know them or their family, or not. For anyone currently following this page who is not a family member, friend or family member of a friend or from the communities in which I grew up, but want to stay in touch, please start following our Retirement Redo page. Check out all the interesting topics it covers below. Anyone else currently following my personal page will eventually be blocked, but only after several polite posts encouraging them to join our Retirement Redo page.

Our Retirement Redo page will focus on information of benefit to anyone in or considering retirement, or in this age group. We will regularly make leading-edge, but brief, posts about nutrition and supplements, appropriate fitness and exercise, and mental wellness strategies and research findings.

This page is intended for curious but passive followers who do not wish to learn detailed strategies or information, ask questions or otherwise engage with fellow followers or members.

Active Boomers Private Group is intended for anyone who wants to make the most of their remaining years, overcome current health challenges, stay or become more fit, lose a little weight, achieve the dreams and goals they have, or may have forgotten about, or overcome other challenges of aging, including loneliness, depression or loss of purpose. We all need some purpose that gives us that spark to fully engage in life.

The biggest risk with using a social media platform, is we are all subject to the whims and policies, potential fees or survival of the platforms we use. If FB were to do anything to disrupt, charge fees or remove these pages all our followers and members who do not have alternative contact information, could lose touch with each other. This is a risk we should not ignore.

To mitigate this risk, and the potential lose of our contacts, we will be requesting an alternative communication means, an email address (suggested), phone number or physical address, from all our friends, members and followers. We do not want to leave the fate of our online friendships and contacts in the hands of FB or any other Social Media organization. Do you?

Unleash Your Vitality: Transform Your Life!

In our Active Boomers Private Group we focus on encouraging our members, most of whom are Baby Boomers, to retain or re-kindle their spark for active, healthy living.

As we enter our 60s and 70s, it's easy to slip into habits that drain our energy, leading to weight gain and/or osteoporosis (brittle bones), decreased activities with less exercise, and unhealthy eating. This downward spiral not only shortens lifespan but also dramatically cuts health span, increasing the risk of chronic illnesses, falls and even depression.

But it doesn’t have to be this way!
We want to help fellow Boomers retain or reclaim their zest for life. Together, we can reverse the trends that hold us back and ignite a new passion for healthy living.

Join our great group at no cost or obligation.

On our Active Boomers Private Group page in the series Protecting Your Aging Brain we outline some of the more dramatic and ultimately destructive changes that can happen as our brains age.

However, we also point out not all news on aging is bad news! In fact, there is one group who can provide us with great hope and incentive to do our very best to live in such a way as to protect and enhance our mental, emotional and physical faculties. Cognitive Super-Agers are individuals who, despite their years, perform exceptionally well on memory and cognitive tests, equaling or even doing better than much younger adults.

If you would like to learn more about Super-Agers and what you can do to protect your mind and memory check out our Active Boomers Private Group at the link below. If you are not a member, just request to join, send us a DM or email Dale at dahackinen@yahoo.com and ask to join Active Boomers. There are no membership or any other fees.

Here's an excerpt from a post on my page Active Boomers Private Group which likely is of interest to everyone.

Head to Heart to Higher Power Series
Protecting Your Aging Brain Part 1

"Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears." – John Lennon

"Getting old is like climbing a mountain; you get a little out of breath, but the view is much better!" – Ingrid Bergman

"Laughter is timeless. Imagination has no age. And dreams are forever." – Walt Disney

If you browse through medical or psychology websites, books or articles about what happens to your brain, memory and thinking capacity as you age, it can be a harrowing experience. Here’s some unsettling tidbits you are likely to come across:

• As you age, your brain undergoes a series of changes, including a decrease in brain volume, slower processing speeds, and potential decline in some cognitive (ie thinking and memory) functions.

• A NYU Langone Health article, in January, 2025, titled, ‘United States Dementia Cases Estimated to Double by 2060’ reported “A new study shows that the risk of developing dementia at any time after age 55 among Americans is 42 percent, more than double the risk reported by older studies. That dementia risk translates into an estimated half-million cases this year, rising to a million new cases a year by 2060, according to the new work. Dementia involves progressive declines in memory, concentration, and judgment. The increasing number of cases is directly tied to the aging of the U.S. population. Beyond aging, a high risk of dementia is linked to genetic factors, as well as high rates of hypertension and diabetes, obesity, unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, and poor mental health.”

• Among the above study’s other major findings was that the lifetime risk of dementia increases to over 50 percent among those who reach age 75.

• In Canada, the prevalence of dementia also increases significantly as we age. While dementia rates are low in younger age groups, they rise rapidly after age 65, doubling approximately every five years.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. Alzheimer's disease begins with the appearance of a buildup of proteins called amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. These cause brain cells to die and the brain to shrink over time.

Some of the early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include forgetting recent events or conversations. As it progresses, Alzheimer's disease leads to serious memory loss and affects a person's ability to do regular tasks and activities. In advanced stages, loss of brain function can cause dehydration, malnutrition and/or infection. Individuals can experience a severe decline in thinking and physical abilities, requiring extensive care. Alzheimer’s patients eventually lose the ability to communicate, recognize loved ones, and perform basic tasks like eating, walking, and using the restroom. Not a pretty picture!

Fortunately, thanks to advancing research on Alzheimer’s, strategies for slowing, preventing and perhaps even reversing some of it’s devastating consequences are beginning to come to light. In the series Protecting Your Aging Brain on my page Active Boomers Private Group series, we will take an in-depth look at some of the major strategies each of us can incorporate in our daily lives, if we haven’t already. Our brains need all the help they can get, as the years go by.

While living in Kuwait in 1999 I was taking a couple friends from Canada on a tour.

When we saw some camels in the desert, my friends wanted to try to get some close up pictures. We left my car and went trekking across the small sand dunes towards the camels. About 200 or so metres into the desert I noticed 4 small spikes sticking up out of the sand. A closer look showed they were attached to a small, weathered ball-shaped object buried in the sand. I instantly recognized it, as I had seen similar objects in a museum. It was the top of a landmine left behind from the Gulf War!

I'm not sure if it was live, but I wanted to remain so!! We might have stumbled into an old mine field! I yelled out to my friends, who were now well ahead, to stop immediately and told them our situation. Then I had an idea. I told them to look for nearby camel tracks and to step only on the camel tracks. Following in the steps of these Ships of the Desert we eventually made our way back to the road and my car.

My friends never returned for another visit to Kuwait!
