We asked an autism expert how she advises parents to talk to kids about their diagnosis, depending on what age they are, and why she recommends telling kids sooner, rather than later.

Read more at the link below including what should a thorough evaluation look like, why diagnoses are sometimes delayed, especially in Black children and in girls, and how to explain an autism diagnosis to friends and family.

The holiday season can bring a mix of emotions, memories, and challenges that differ from person to person. Here's why it's important to recognize this:

❤️‍🩹🎄 Personal Loss or Grief: For those who have lost loved ones, Christmas can amplify feelings of sadness and longing, as traditions and gatherings may feel incomplete.

❤️‍🩹🎄Financial Pressures: The commercial aspect of the holidays can create stress for people struggling to meet expectations or make ends meet.

❤️‍🩹🎄Family Dynamics: Not everyone has a supportive or harmonious family, and the holidays can bring tension or highlight painful relationships.

❤️‍🩹🎄Loneliness: For some, Christmas may emphasize isolation, especially for those who are far from family or don't have a close community to celebrate with.

❤️‍🩹🎄Mental Health Challenges: The societal pressure to feel joyous can make it harder for those dealing with depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues.

❤️‍🩹🎄Cultural or Religious Differences: Not everyone celebrates Christmas or shares the same traditions, and feeling "outside" the norm can be isolating.

By acknowledging these realities, we can make space for compassion, understanding, and inclusivity, allowing people to honor their feelings and experiences, whatever they may be. Christmas doesn't have to be "wonderful" for it to be meaningful or for people to find moments of peace in their own way..

The content of a couple’s complaints is often not the core issue plaguing their relationship. Their disagreements over money, s*x, time management, or raising kids are only part of the picture.

Partners will believe that the subject of their conflicts – money, s*x, time, etc – is the source of their problems. The core issue plaguing their relationship lies not in these complaints, but in how they deal with one other.

Errors in memory, perception, and communication are most likely to blame.

Everyone makes errors in these areas. Accepting this will make it easier to view misunderstandings as a result of human error rather than personal attacks.

The goal is to get partners to remain curious and accept that their version of reality is not indisputable.

Rapid repair is critical in a relationship. Small problems can balloon into large ongoing issues if they are left unaddressed.

Apologies don’t have to be perfect. They don’t have to be eloquent. They just have to be said.

All that matters is that the offending partner takes complete responsibility for what they did, soothes their partner’s pain and that they do this as soon as possible. If their partner is left unregulated, that emotional injury will fester.
