Conscious Walking Exercise
Adapted from Steven Hick’s “Mindfulness and Social Work” 2009
Walking is one of my favourite things and walking in a mindful way is bliss. This mostly happens to me when I am surrounded by natural beauty but, with conscious intention, I can do it anywhere. Conscious walking really helps me when I’m stressed because it relieves restlessness and agitation.
Do you use your walks to get physical exercise and/ or think about what you are going to do or say in the near future? Do you find that your walks do not leave you refreshed? If so, you may find that conscious walking will help with that.
Here is an easy conscious walking exercise:
Breathe in “I have arrived”;breathe out “ I am home.”
Breathe in “In the here”;breathe out “ In the now.”
Breathe in “I am solid”;breathe out “ I am free.”
Breathe in “In the ultimate”;breathe out “ I dwell.”
Remember, even if you’re walking in a rush you can be fully present in your breath and how you step on the earth.
