Hello! My name is Carrie Dungey (pronounced 'dunjee')
I live in Airdrie, Alberta, Canada with my husband, 3 daughters and big ol' boxer-bulldog. I love savouring a warm cup of herbal tea, baking up cookies, muffins and sourdough bread, journaling, moon-bathing, sitting in stillness, walking my dog and singing off-key! As your doula, I am dedicated to walking with you along the most extraordinary path that is pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Supporting you in the ways that are most meaningful to you is my role and it is truly an honour to be a part of your transformational journey. Please reach out to me at any time with any questions you have about doula support. I LOVE to talk about all things pregnancy and birth related and, with an open heart, I am here to listen to you, to learn all about you in order to serve you to the best of my abilities. Much Love,
Carrie

🚽✨ Why do some women LOVE labouring on the toilet?

It sounds strange… until you understand physiology.

And then it makes perfect sense.

Here’s why the toilet can actually be a brilliant place to labour:

1️⃣ It helps you relax your pelvic floor

You can’t p*e or p**p without relaxing your pelvic floor.

That same relaxation is exactly what your body needs to let your baby descend.

Toilets naturally trigger a “let go” reflex.
Less clenching = more opening.

2️⃣ It reduces the urge to fight contractions

When contractions get intense, many women tighten everything.

But sitting on the toilet:
🚽Encourages a forward-leaning position
🚽 Lets your belly hang
🚽 Widens the pelvic outlet

It’s very similar to a supported squat, which we know opens the pelvis beautifully.

3️⃣ It works with gravity

Unlike lying in bed, the toilet keeps you upright.

Gravity helps baby move down.
Downward pressure on the cervix can strengthen contractions.
Stronger contractions (in active labour) = progress.

4️⃣ It mimics the “primitive” birth environment

We are mammals.

When labour gets intense, many women instinctively seek:
• Privacy
• Small spaces
• Low stimulation

The bathroom is often dimmer, quieter and away from people watching

That alone can help oxytocin flow better.

And oxytocin = effective contractions.

5️⃣ It can help with that “I feel like I need to p**p” sensation

In active labour, baby’s head puts pressure on the re**um.

The toilet gives women a safe place to release that urge without embarrassment — and often labour picks up afterward.

⚠️ A quick safety note:

If someone is feeling faint, heavily medicated, or very close to pushing, they should have support nearby. We don’t want anyone falling.

As a labour nurse, I’ve seen stalled labours suddenly pick up after 20–30 minutes on the toilet.

Sometimes the most high-tech thing you can do in labour…

Is sit on a toilet. 💛

I love learning, I love expanding my skill set but, more than anything, I love knowing that there are so many people out there who have a mission to bring beauty, knowledge, wisdom and wonder back to the birth space. 🙏💕🙏💕

Labour Comfort Measures

Even if you know you are planning to get an epidural, you will need to draw upon a plethora of comfort measures to get through all of early labour and up until you are admitted to hospital (around 6 centimeters, which is when they consider you in active labour).

Sometimes the epidural doesn't give you the relief that you were expecting and sometimes you'll have to wait until the anesthesiologist is available (could be a couple of hours), so bottom line is you need to get strong in your coping mechanisms...and practise before labour begins!

Your partner also needs to be knowledgeable about how to guide you in the different options for at-home pain management. (key take-away, one of their main roles is to be your cheerleader and prime encourager 🥰)

Here are some options:
☆☆breathwork - intentional, grounding breathing (so important!)
•TENS machine
•water - shower or bath
•rest
•forward leaning positions
•counter pressure (hip squeezes; pressure on your tailbone)
•red light therapy
•horse lips; ragdoll relaxation
•visualizations and affirmations
•labour comb
•music or hypnobirthing playlist
•heat or cold packs on your lower back
•'shaking the apples' or the jiggle to help release tension
•forward leaning positions (e.g., on all fours leaning over the birth ba
•dancing
•swaying
•rocking
•low moaning sounds
•abdominal lift & tuck
•stay hydrated and nourished

Caveat: Don't overdo it!
If you can rest, rest.

But when things start becoming intense enough that you feel you need support and options for pain management, here are some ideas and techniques!

Much Love,
Carrie 💜
