Grateful for the opportunity to present to an amazing group of men and women at the Calgary S*x Addicts Anonymous retreat this weekend. I presented on Shame, Entitlement and Getting to Empathy in Recovery from Addiction. Shame and Entitlement often show up as two sides of the same coin. The Shame Core that develops out of attachment wounds and trauma leads to denial, justification, rationalization, minimization, defensiveness etc. This "Entitlement" response is an attempt at protection from the pain of shame, but only ends up reinforcing it. Empathy/Compassion for self and others is the potent antidote that disrupts the cycle. Empathy/Compassion are skills that can be learned and bring one out of secrecy, isolation and disconnection, into vulnerability, acceptance, and authentic connection.

Defensivenes and shame are responses that protect the betrayer from surrender, acceptance, and empathy. Until one can learn to see their betrayed partners hurt through the lens of trauma and pain, sit in and accept the discomfort, and respond with compassion not reactivity, healing the relational wounds of betrayal cannot happen.
