July 7 is National Injury Prevention Day.

Alberta’s Primary Care Networks want to help you make the most of summer — safely!
Whether you’re hiking, biking, swimming, or just soaking up the sun, a few small steps can go a long way in preventing injury:
- Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen
- Use helmets and life jackets for outdoor adventures
- Watch your step on uneven trails or wet pool decks
- Wear supportive footwear (leave the flip-flops for the beach!)
- Stretch before and after activity to prevent strains

Talk to your primary care provider about more ways to move, play, and enjoy the season.

🧠 June is Stroke Month – Every Minute Counts! ⏱️

Recognizing the signs of a stroke and acting FAST can save a life:

👉 F – Face drooping
👉 A – Arm weakness
👉 S – Speech difficulty
👉 T – Time to call 911

Stroke risk increases with age, but there’s a lot you can do to lower it. High blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and lack of physical activity all increase your risk.

💡 Take action today:
HPCN offers a free Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Workshop (see https://hpcn.ca/classes/), or you can speak with the nurse in your medical home (your doctor’s office) to assess and manage your risk.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. A day to honour the strength, knowledge and enduring presence of Indigenous peoples. We are listening and learning. We are working to create ongoing spaces of trust, respect and cultural safety.
Across our Primary Care Networks, we incorporate these practices:
- Creating Safe Spaces
- Learning Together: Culturally safe training on topics like colonization, racism, and allyship.
- Indigenous Patient Advocacy: We work with patients to understand their healthcare journey, remove barriers and connect them with the right care.

Join us in learning, listening and honouring Indigenous experiences. Looking for a way to take part? Click here for a list of Indigenous Peoples Day events happening in communities across Alberta: https://bit.ly/3ZL52VO

Everyone deserves access to safe, inclusive and affirming health care. This Pride Month, Alberta’s Primary Care Networks recognize the unique barriers 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals may face when seeking care. Stigma, discrimination and a lack of inclusive services can make accessing health support feel more difficult than it should be.

Our teams are here to help bridge that gap and help connect you with the right resources and supports in your community.

Everyone deserve to feel safe, supported, and seen.

June is Men's Health Month

Did you know that 1 in 2 men are at risk of social isolation and facing higher levels of stress and depression? The latest research from Men's Health Foundation shows the importance of open conversations and accessible support.

It's time to talk about the tough stuff, break the silence, and build better mental health—together. Support starts with a conversation, and your medical home team (including nurses and social workers at your doctor's office) is a great place to begin.

Let’s create a national movement that brings men together. 💪 Learn more at menshealthfoundation.ca

From sleep struggles to mood swings and brain fog, the
symptoms of menopause can be overwhelming. Many women dismiss their symptoms, but talking to your healthcare provider can greatly improve symptom management and your quality of life.

We spoke with Dr. Cheema, a PCN physician, to understand more about menopause. Dr. Cheema shares this reminder: “You’re not alone. Advocate for yourself, stay informed, and don’t give up on finding what works for you.” Full article link: www.albertafindadoctor.ca/news/understanding-menopause-and-perimenopause

If you’re looking for support, talk to your primary care provider for more information, resources, or a possible referral to a certified menopause provider.
