Friends for fitness is my workout strategy!

As the weather and the social calendar cools down after summer, I am so grateful to have more time for movement at the gym. However motivating myself and staying consistent with my workouts has always been a challenge for me. But when I have a friend to go with, the accountability and social piece that that brings makes exercising more fun for me.

What are your tips for staying consistent with workouts? I would love to know in the comments below!

Review time! This testimonial comes from a one-to-one client of mine. I was helping her balance her blood sugars as she was having lows. We worked together to increase the amount of carbohydrate-rich foods she was eating and added more snacks in the day to do this.

Like many people, one of her reservations about working with a dietitian was worries about someone telling her what NOT to eat and having a more restrictive approach. This is a real concern! But I don't practice that way and a lot of dietitians are not like this either. I try to focus on a more body positive and personalized approach instead of promoting restrictive diets. DM me if you would like to more about what it is like to work with a dietitian!

Will you be going through your pre-op appointments in the new year? Take a look at my 4 tips below for how to breeze through these like a pro!

1️⃣ Be prepared: Do your research before you get to your appointments. Research the kind of surgery you are interested in, the post-op diet phases and complete any paperwork that your centre asks you to do beforehand. If your centre has a workbook that you can download, make sure you do this and review it before your appointments.

2️⃣ Be realistic: Be honest with yourself about what you think you might need extra help with after surgery. Is meal routine your problem? Do you think you'll remember to take your vitamins? Do you need meal planning support? Mention this to your team so that they can give you the best recommendations to help you address your pain points.

3️⃣ Be honest: No one is expecting you to show that you are PERFECT at your appointments. What the team is looking for is that you answer their questions truthfully and accurately so that they can make a care plan that works with your needs so that you succeed after surgery.

4️⃣ Take the feedback and USE it: The feedback given in your pre-op appointments is meant to help you work on any gaps in your lifestyle to adapt to the post-op life. Try not to think of it as "right" or "wrong". You are learning and it is ok to not know all the answers going into surgery. What is is important is that you know which areas need your attention so that you can work best with your surgical tool.

Best of luck preparing for your appointments friends! Message me if you have any questions about this. I am always happy to chat if you don't know where to begin!

People ask me all the time if I think bariatric surgery really works. I do. It primes our minds and bodies to break the cycle of dieting because it forces us to learn a new way to eat and it physically and hormonally changes us to create long-term weight loss.

Its not the same as keto or Whole 30 or (insert latest FAD diet here). If you have struggled with dieting and don't know what to do next, consider learning more about bariatric surgery because maybe it's time to try another way.

To anyone who needs to hear this: you do not need to be perfect to succeed after bariatric surgery.

As we go into the holidays we are going to find changes in our routine with parties and family get togethers coming up. Give yourself a bit of grace this season and recognize that you might not hit your macros perfectly or that the scale might not move as quickly this time of year. And that is okay. Take time to be consistent where you can. Get that protein and fibre on your plate at meals. Drink your water. Play with kids, nieces and nephews for activity. Finally, remember to enjoy yourself!

There are a lot of specialized products in the sports industry and they may be useful depending on our energy output during exercise and how much restriction our sleeve or pouch gives us.

But how do these products jive with our surgical tool?

1️⃣ You might find yourself already using a protein powder to hit your post-op nutrient targets! A WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE powder is most recommended because it contains a high amount of protein and is most easily absorbed after bariatric surgery.

2️⃣ CAFFEINE and carbohydrate are used in pre-workout supplement drinks to give you a boost of energy for endurance and explosive movements. Energy gels are high in SUGAR and could cause dumping. Reading the label on these products is super important, especially if you have not yet been cleared to have caffeine by your surgical team.

3️⃣ A re-hydration energy drink like a powerade or a gatorade could be useful if your are exercising for many hours at a time and have really high sweat losses. What’s important to remember about these products is that they can have a lot of added SUGAR, so you want to take a good look at the label to see if it will work for you.
