Supraspinatus tendinitis:
also known as supraspinatus tendinopathy or tendinosis, is a condition where the supraspinatus tendon, one of the four tendons in the rotator cuff, becomes inflamed or irritated. This can cause pain and limited range of motion in the shoulder, particularly during overhead activities.
Causes:
1- Overuse: Repetitive overhead activities, such as throwing, swimming, or painting, can strain the supraspinatus tendon.
2- Muscle Imbalance: Weakness or tightness in the surrounding shoulder muscles can contribute to the condition.
3- Impingement: The tendon can be pinched between the acromion bone and the head of the humerus, especially during overhead movements.
4- Direct Trauma: A direct blow to the shoulder can also cause tendinitis.
5- Aging: Degenerative changes in the tendon can increase the risk of tendinitis.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the shoulder, especially when raising the arm or reaching overhead.
- Aching or burning sensation in the shoulder.
- Weakness in the shoulder when lifting or pushing.
- Limited range of motion.
- Difficulty with daily activities like brushing hair or putting on clothes.
Diagnosis:
- Physical exam: A doctor will assess your shoulder's range of motion and strength.
- Imaging tests: X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound may be used to visualize the tendon and surrounding structures.
Treatment:
- Rest: Avoiding activities that aggravate the pain.
- Ice: Applying ice packs to reduce inflammation.
- Anti-inflammatory medications: Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers may help.
- Physical therapy: using modalities to relief pain and inflammation . Exercises to strengthen the shoulder muscles and improve range of motion.
- Corticosteroid injections: Injections can help reduce inflammation and pain.
- Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair a torn tendon or decompress the subacromial space.
