March 21 marks , a day to celebrate the lives of people with Down syndrome and recognize their contributions to families and communities. The date, 21/3, represents the three copies of chromosome 21.

This year’s theme by World Down Syndrome Day , highlights the importance of meaningful connections and true inclusion. Loneliness can affect people with Down syndrome even when they are surrounded by others, often fueled by stigma and discrimination. Addressing these barriers is important to ensure they are fully seen, valued and supported.

On our blog, Grandview Kids mom Julie shares her journey raising her son Liam, highlighting his love of music, adventure and connection with others while navigating life with complex needs. He was diagnosed with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism, and requires full-time support in daily life. Julie reflects on the challenges they have navigated, including early feeding struggles and ongoing advocacy for Liam’s needs, while celebrating his resilience and joyful spirit. With the support of his family and Grandview Kids, Liam continues to thrive, demonstrating the power of unconditional love in fostering strong support systems.

Language matters. Words rooted in disability should never be used as insults. They can cause real harm and reinforce stigma that excludes people from fully participating in their communities.

Tomorrow is . This video from CoorDown is a powerful reminder to "just evolve" how we speak to build a more inclusive world for everyone.

At Grandview Kids, we see the potential in every child and youth we serve. We firmly oppose language that diminishes or harms people. Together, we can instead choose words that uphold respect, inclusion and belonging.

March 17 marks , a time to recognize the impact of social workers on the lives of children, youth and families. At Grandview Kids, when care and insight come together, social workers make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children, youth and families we serve.

Parenting a child or youth with additional needs often means taking on multiple roles, including caregiver, advocate and care co-ordinator, which can lead to exhaustion. Caregivers need time to rest and recharge through respite.

On our blog, Grandview Kids social worker Mandy D. explains the importance of finding respite and offers guidance on accessing support, tips while waiting for funding, and funding resources for recreational activities. Respite care provides essential, temporary relief for primary caregivers, helping prevent burnout, reduce stress and support overall well-being. It can take many forms and may be difficult to access, but even a short break can make a meaningful difference.
