Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis in the knee. It’s a degenerative joint disease where the cartilage that protects the end of your bones breaks down from factors such as age-related wear and tear, knee injury, and repetitive stress. This causes your bones to rub on each other, causing inflammation, pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility at the knee. It is a progressive disease which gets worse with time, going from Minor, Mild, Moderate, to Severe.
Diagnosis is confirmed with medical history, a physical exam, and an x-ray. There is currently no way to cure OA, but symptoms can be managed through treatments like physiotherapy, pain medication, hot and cold therapy, injections like PRP, cortisone, and viscosupplementation, and surgery if nonsurgical interventions are ineffective.
