Taking the time to figure out what truly matters to you in the long run is one of the best investments you can make for your well-being. When we have clarity on our core values, it becomes easier to align our daily actions with what really drives us, leading to a sense of purpose and fulfillment. This focus allows us to navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience, knowing that we’re moving toward something meaningful.

Focusing on what’s important long-term not only provides direction but also helps reduce anxiety and stress. It shifts your mindset from chasing distractions to prioritizing what really enhances your happiness and mental health. So, take a step back, reflect, and center your energy on what is important.

Putting time into relationships, spirituality, and physical health may not seem efficient. You may not see progress in a measurable way, but soon you will notice a shift. More peace, more joy, more clarity. The peace and clarity that follow will support your psychological health and empower you to live a more intentional, balanced life.

Improving focus can have a profound impact on relationships by enhancing communication and understanding between individuals. When we actively listen to others, without distractions or divided attention, it shows that we value their words and feelings. This deeper level of engagement fosters stronger connections and trust, allowing both parties to feel seen and heard. Focus, and “being in the moment” take practice.

In counselling we can work on focus in a couple of different ways both directly and indirectly.

1. Reducing trauma/PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental disorders can help a person experience less dissociation, become less easily triggered or overwhelmed, and in a less direct way, can help to increase their ability to focus.

2. Helping a person with emotional regulation, noticing body sensations and emotions and learning how to cope with and manage these can allow a person to stay more present.

3. Learning how to communicate better with a partner or family members can help to increase focus. When we aren’t feeling we need to defend or prove ourselves we can free up energy to focus on others or on what is going on around us.

Focusing on the present moment in relationships can reduce stress and increase overall satisfaction. Many issues arise when people dwell on past conflicts or worry about future uncertainties, but staying focused on the here and now allows you to enjoy and appreciate each moment spent together. It helps create a positive, calm environment where both people feel secure and valued, ultimately strengthening the bond and paving the way for a healthier, more fulfilling relationship.

Even those of us diagnosed with ADHD can work on focus and studies have shown that we can grow grey matter in the brain when practicing our focus twice a day for a year! If your ability to focus is poor, and you feel counselling may help then feel free to book in for a session with one of us. We provide individual, couples, family and child-centred play therapy.

“Relationships are a lot like houses: without a good foundation, they’ll crumble. When a light bulb goes out, you don’t buy a new house, you change the bulb. When the faucet drips, you don’t start mopping the floor before you fix the leak. In other words, no matter how much digging it takes, it’s important to get to the root of a problem.”

We are so incredibly honoured to walk with others as they gain greater insight into themselves, gain more acceptance for themselves and create change even where it is difficult. We are inspired by human resilience and feel nobody is beyond reach or hope of change. We are here for the journey and to create a space that is safe in which to rediscover, uncover and move towards an authentic you.
