Winter & Peripheral Neuropathy ❄️

Noticing more burning, tingling, or numbness in your feet during winter? Cold temperatures can reduce circulation and increase nerve sensitivity, making neuropathy symptoms feel worse.

💡Ways to Manage Neuropathy Symptoms in the Cold
Keep feet warm (not hot), moisturize daily, stay active, wear supportive footwear, and check your feet regularly.

❗ When to Seek Help
If your pain increases, sensations change, or new numbness develops, a chiropodist can help assess nerve function, prevent complications, and recommend treatment options.

Many people jump into new routines too quickly at the start of the year. When activity levels increase suddenly, extra stress can be placed on the feet and lower body, sometimes leading to discomfort or setbacks.

Your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back work together to support movement. Easing into new activities helps support comfort, balance, and long-term consistency.

Start smart this year:
Build activity gradually 🕒
Choose supportive footwear 👟
Mix in low-impact movement 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️
Warm up, cool down, and allow recovery 🔄
Listen to your body—don’t push through pain ⚠️

If discomfort is holding you back or you’re unsure how to start safely, Alliston Foot & Orthotic Clinic is here to support your movement goals—so you can stay active with confidence.

As temperatures drop, our footwear gets heavier, warmer, and often less flexible. Here’s how to help your feet adjust comfortably.

🥾 Check Your Boot Fit
✨ Toe Room: Ensure a thumb’s width of space at the front
✨ Arch Support: Winter boots often lack built-in support — add orthotics or insoles if needed
✨ Ankle Stability: A snug, supportive ankle prevents rolling on icy surfaces
✨ Heel Fit: Your heel should stay secure without lifting

❄️ Don’t Forget Warmth Without Bulk: Choose boots with good insulation but still enough room for your toes to move. Thick socks shouldn’t make your boots tight.

❄️ Winter Skin Alert: Dry, Cracked Heels ❄️
Dry, cracked heels are common in colder months — and for some people, the skin can split or even bleed, making every step uncomfortable.

🦶 Why It Happens
Cold, dry winter air pulls moisture from the skin. Your heels carry a lot of pressure, so when the skin becomes dry and thick, it’s more likely to crack.

💧 How to Treat & Prevent Cracked Heels
✨ Moisturize daily with a urea-based cream (10–25%) — urea helps exfoliate and draw moisture into the skin, making it one of the best ingredients for repairing cracked heels.
✨ Apply cream at night and lock it in with socks.
✨ Avoid picking or over-filing, which can make cracks worse.
✨ Protect your feet with proper footwear and warm socks.
✨ Hydrate & consider a humidifier to combat dry indoor air.

❗ When to Seek Help
If cracks become deep, painful, or start to bleed, a chiropodist can safely treat the area, reduce thickened skin, and help prevent infection.

Some individuals living with diabetes may notice that wounds take longer to heal.

This can be related to changes in circulation, blood sugar levels, or reduced sensation (neuropathy). When sensation is diminished, a person may not feel pressure, friction, or small injuries, which can delay awareness of a wound and affect how quickly it begins to heal.

Healthy nerves play an important role in wound healing. Yearly monofilament testing helps determine whether the nerves in the feet are sending signals properly. This simple test can identify reduced sensation, which may influence how well the skin responds to injury and how effectively it begins to close or form a protective scab.

Early identification of sensation loss is an important part of ongoing foot monitoring for individuals living with diabetes.

Many people with diabetes believe that if their feet don’t hurt, everything must be fine — but that’s a common misconception. ❌🦶

Neuropathy (nerve damage) can reduce your ability to feel pain, pressure, or temperature changes. This means small issues like cuts, blisters, or areas of pressure can develop quietly and become more serious over time. ⚠️

Even without pain, your feet may not be telling the whole story.

Regular foot checks — both at home and with your foot specialist — are an important part of preventing complications and keeping your feet healthy. ✔️👣

If you have diabetes, staying proactive is one of the best ways to protect your long-term foot health. 💙✨

Neuropathy refers to nerve damage that can reduce sensation in the feet.

When sensation is diminished, small injuries or pressure areas may go unnoticed, which can increase the risk of ulcers and infection—especially for individuals living with diabetes.

Daily foot checks, proper footwear, and regular assessments with a foot health professional are key parts of prevention and early detection.
