We disconnect from ourselves to survive, to numb the emotions we don't want to admit or that feel too big. This creates dissonance within us, where we cannot trust our own instincts, leading to perpetual anxiety.

We don't often talk about the pain of not having somewhere to direct our love. We are born with an infinite amount of love to share, and we are happiest when we can do so freely. But when that love is tainted with feelings of shame, of being 'too much', or simply not received, it can be incredibly devastating. When a parent rejects a child's love, that child's whole being feels in jeopardy. The child learns that my love is 'wrong' or 'no good' or 'harmful' or 'not enough'. Which creates a hesitation to extend it. At least in a way that was natural and flowing and authentic. Instead the child adapts their idea of 'love' to however they are being treated by the parent. This must be what 'love' is. Or they learn to become what the parent needs as an act of love, which may be invisible, small, acquiescent, 'strong' (I have no needs of my own) or the scapegoat. When the gate is locked, love cannot flow out, nor in. Aside from what has been 'learned'.
