Key #6 - Water!
1 gallon fountain for every 50 birds. Clean, fresh water should always be available on a "free-choice" basis. Chicks should never run out of water.
Special care should be taken to ensure the brooding area does not become wet. Chicks will chill quickly and may result in loss.
*Tip - Dip chicks beak into warm water when they first arrive so they get a drink and warm up at the same time!
We have a variety of sizes of waterers in stock to meet all flock sizes and needs!

Key #5 - Temperature
Pre-heat the pen 24 hours BEFORE the chicks arrive!
Temperature at floor level must be 95F for the first week, lowering it by 5F per week until 75F is reached. Place a high-low thermometer at floor level will help to ensure the correct temperature is achieved.
* Chilling commonly affects the heart, legs and growth rate. It is especially critical with White Rock Broilers! Success will be directly attributed to the comfort and care that you provide.

Did you know? 👀

We carry colostrum! Lamb/Kid Goat, and Calf!

That first feed is critical for immunity, strength, and getting those babies off to a strong start. Colostrum needs to be fed within 2 hours to have the maximum effects from absorption. Having colostrum on hand can make all the difference when you need it most.

📍 Stop in and make sure you’re prepared this season!

Key #4 - Heat Source
Provide a heat source, the most common being an infra-red heat lamp, hung at approx. 18" from the floor, to keep them warm. You will need 1 lamp per 50 chicks. We recommend a second lamp as a back-up heat source in case your first lamp fails.
Your lamp should be placed and turned on 24hrs prior to arrival or your baby chicks. This will ensure the proper temperature is achieved before your chicks arrive.
Heat lamps and heat bulbs are in stock!

Key #3 - Bedding
Provide clean, dry mold free bedding of chopped straw or shavings to a depth of 3-4 inches. Do not use sawdust! The depth of the litter should be increased if the floor of the pen is cold or damp.
We have shavings in stock!

Key #2 - SPACE!
Confine chicks to a smaller area. A circular chick guard will define their space, help keep them warm and will protect them from drafts. Provide approx. 1/2 sq. ft. per chick and 3/4 sq.ft. per turkey poult. Increase pen size after about 1 week.
* Tip - use a kiddie pool for your chicks!

Welcome to our daily chick tips! Each day we will share a tip to taking care of your chicks!

Key #1 - PREPARE
The key to your success is PREPARATION and PLANNING BEFORE your chicks arrive! New chicks are "babies" and need all the "tender loving care" you can give them!
Clean, disinfect and dry the brooding area. Ensure it is warm, draft free, rodent free and inaccessible to wild birds and other predators.
