The minimum daily fiber recommendation is around 30-35 g per day!🍎🫘🍞

Many people are not reaching this target - either through poor nutrition intake, not eating enough food throughout the day (very common!), or because they avoid high-fiber foods due to digestive upset (this warrants a conversation with an ND!). 🌿

Fiber is crucial for the health of our gut microbiome - and can prevent certain cancers. ❤️

Are you getting enough fiber per day? Apps like Cronometer or MyFitnessPal can make it easy to track! 🥗

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for men and women combined in the United States. Which dietary factors may play a role in our cancer risk?

🔴 Foods we should avoid:
Processed meats are cancer-causing, classified as a Group 1 carcinogen. The risk of colorectal cancer is 18% higher for every 50 grams eaten a day, which is about one hot dog, two breakfast links, or two slices of Canadian bacon or ham. Processed meat may also increase the risk of prostate cancer, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

🟢 Foods we should eat more of:
A high-fiber diet (one with more than 50 grams a day) is beneficial not just for our overall gut health, but for chronic disease prevention, too. When our friendly gut flora ferment fiber, they produce beneficial compounds like butyrate, which appears to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Fiber may also help improve cholesterol, immune function, and blood sugar control, as well as lower blood pressure, reduce cancer risk (specifically colon and breast cancer), and more.

Fiber is found in whole, unrefined plant foods, such as beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.

✅ Overall lifestyle:
Up to 71% of colon cancer cases appear to be preventable through simple diet and lifestyle changes. In addition to eating more fiber and cutting out processed meats, not smoking or drinking alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular exercise may be beneficial for colon cancer prevention.

A little sneak peek of my new location in Pictou! 👀

My office is located in a charming, renovated historic building with beautiful views of the harbour 🌊⛵️

There are two wonderful therapists in the offices next to mine, as well as a large open space on the floor above that will host yoga classes, group wellness events, and more 🧘‍♀️🌿

On the ground level, you’ll find the cutest coffee shop - Sea Glass Coffee House 🐚☕️

It truly feels a bit like stepping into a Hallmark movie 💕☺️

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be building furniture, hanging wall art, and adding the finishing touches to make the space feel just right for you 🌼🩷

I can’t wait to welcome you into this beautiful space very soon 🫶

We have some BIG news to share 🩷

On April 1st last year, I took the leap and opened my very own clinic in Antigonish. Bluebell Natural Medicine had been a dream of mine for years, and I was so excited to finally create the space I had always envisioned ✨️

This past year has been filled with so much growth, and building this practice has brought me such a deep sense of joy and purpose ☺️

And now… I’m so excited to share what’s next 🌿

Bluebell Natural Medicine is expanding, and I’ll be opening a second location in Pictou County! 🌸

This step feels incredibly meaningful. It allows me to support more individuals across Pictou County and surrounding communities with personalized, evidence-informed care.

My practice will remain focused on women’s health and fertility, while continuing to welcome those seeking general naturopathic care.

You can find me at
🌊 27 Water St, Suite 203, Pictou

🌸Does birth control affect fertility?

This is a question I get often in my practice! As infertility rates rise, it's normal to question whether the birth control pill or other forms of contraceptives (IUD, injectable, etc) interfere with fertility after discontinuation.

Studies show comparable pregnancy rates within 1 year of stopping contraception use compared with those who weren't on contraceptives.

Certain contraceptives may delay the return to fertility - so always keep this in mind when planning for future fertility goals.

💉Injectable (Depot-Provera): Ovulation usually resumes within 6 months, but can take up to 12 months or longer. Median time to ovulation after discontinuation is ~200 days (about 6-7 months).

🌼Copper IUD/Non-hormonal IUD: Immediate return to fertility after discontinuation.

🌺Mirena/Kyleena/Hormonal IUD: Nearly immediate return to fertility after discontinuation. Menstrual cycle returns to its natural state within 1-3 months.

💊Oral Contraceptive Pill: Ovulation can resume within a few weeks, though it can take up to 3 months to fully establish the body's natural cycle and periods can be irregular during this time.

If you are having fertility concerns or cycles aren't back to normal months after stopping contraceptives, it's important to be properly assessed. Many women are put on the birth control pill for symptoms of irregular periods, acne, heavy bleeding, or period pain - and these can be a sign of PCOS or endometriosis - two conditions that can greatly impact fertility. 🌿

Leaking postpartum?💧

Postpartum Urinary Incontinence is common but treatable! 75% of affected women don't seek help, and of those that do, only 12% receive treatment. Let's change that.

You don't have to struggle alone. There is support out there 🫶

About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I am a Naturopathic Medical Student at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver, British Columbia. Naturopathic Doctors (ND's) are primary care physicians who are trained to diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions and diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, skin conditions, allergies, and more! The goal of the Naturopathic Doctor is to find the root cause of the symptom of which the patient is experiencing and to bring the body back to balance and good health. They utilize modern science and natural medicine to offer a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan, all while emphasizing prevention and using therapies that minimize the risk of harm and side effects. A Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree is a 4-year, full-time, graduate level medical program similar to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, and there are currently 7 accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America . . I have my Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with a major in Biology and am passionate about natural, evidence-based medicine, clinical nutrition, and public speaking. On this page, I will be sharing health information, nutritious recipes, facts about naturopathic medicine, and more! I am SO happy to have you along on my journey and I hope to inspire you to live a healthy, happy, and active lifestyle.

Yours in good health, Emily
