🌸Endometriosis affects approximately 10% of women (190 million women globally), yet it receives significantly less research funding than other chronic health conditions such as diabetes and Crohn's disease.

This highlights the important reality of a historical lack of investment in women's health research.

🔬In 2022, the total US funding for endometriosis was $16 million (~$2 per patient per year).
🔬Also in 2022, Crohn's disease research received $90 million in funding (~$130.07 per patient per year). This is over 65x more per patient than for endometriosis, a female-specific medical condition.
🔬Similar data has been seen for diabetes funding, which far exceeds that of endo.

These three chronic health conditions (endometriosis, diabetes, Crohn's disease) are said to have a similarly high prevalence and impact. The difference is that endometriosis affects women only.

Women deserve adequate funding for a whole-body disease that includes severe pelvic pain, fatigue, and a risk of infertility. 🙌

📣Public Service Announcement - if your Ferritin is drastically low, you need an iron infusion and not a supplement. ✨️

I've seen this scenario so many times..

Patient walks into my office with significant fatigue. We discuss what bloodwork to have done & take a peak at previous bloodwork already done by their provider. Their ferritin a few months ago (or in some cases, a few YEARS ago) was a 4 and they were told to "just pick up an iron supplement at the pharmacy and start taking it". No discussion of dose, form, or re-testing to make sure levels have improved.

They then land in my office months (or sometimes years) after the fact and cannot understand why they are so tired. They think it's a lack of willpower, laziness, or perhaps depression. When in reality, they didn't receive optimal care and should have been sent for an iron infusion and had follow up testing.

Don't let exhaustion take over your life - with the right care, you can be feeling so much better. 🩷

It can have life-altering effects, both physically and emotionally. 💛

Think you may have endo but unsure how to test for it?💛

The gold standard for diagnosis of endometriosis is laparoscopic surgery. Due to the fact that surgery is often needed to confirm endo, SO many women (and young girls who have started menstruating) suffer for years before an investigation is made. Ultrasound and MRI can often appear normal even if endometriosis is present, though endometriomas ("chocolate cysts") can sometimes show up on ultrasound imaging.

CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) is currently the closest thing we have to a blood test to detect endometriosis, but it isn't a perfect test. CA-125 is typically used to assess Ovarian cancer but can sometimes be elevated in those with endometriosis. CA-125 should ideally be used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods or to expedite further investigation.

This email from a very sweet patient this morning absolutely made my day 🥹🫶

Skin conditions, including acne, can rob you of your self-esteem. It can make work, relationships, and everyday life so much harder. Being able to help someone gain their confidence back and feel like themselves again will always be one of my greatest joys.

About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I am a Naturopathic Medical Student at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver, British Columbia. Naturopathic Doctors (ND's) are primary care physicians who are trained to diagnose and treat a variety of health conditions and diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, skin conditions, allergies, and more! The goal of the Naturopathic Doctor is to find the root cause of the symptom of which the patient is experiencing and to bring the body back to balance and good health. They utilize modern science and natural medicine to offer a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan, all while emphasizing prevention and using therapies that minimize the risk of harm and side effects. A Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree is a 4-year, full-time, graduate level medical program similar to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, and there are currently 7 accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America . . I have my Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with a major in Biology and am passionate about natural, evidence-based medicine, clinical nutrition, and public speaking. On this page, I will be sharing health information, nutritious recipes, facts about naturopathic medicine, and more! I am SO happy to have you along on my journey and I hope to inspire you to live a healthy, happy, and active lifestyle.

Yours in good health, Emily
