Welcome Dr. Amtul Ahmed!

Welcome Dr. Amtul Ahmed!

The team here at the Atikokan Medical Clinic is thrilled to continue serving as a Practice Ready Ontario clinical field assessment site.

Practice Ready Ontario is the Government of Ontario’s new program for internationally trained family physicians who already have clinical practice experience. It is part of the plan to expand the health care workforce and connect people to care in high need, rural communities like ours.

Dr. Amtul Ahmed will be joining our team in Atikokan on August 11 and will be directly supervised and assessed by family physicians in our practice, as well as at the hospital, in the emergency department, long-term care and home care. We have always been proud to foster a learning environment for the next wave of medical professionals. It is our hope that you will show the same warm reception and respect to Dr. Ahmed that is shown to our regular physicians.

As always, any questions about the program can be answered by clinic staff by calling 807-597-2721.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Amtul Ahmed to Atikokan!

Due to the measles epidemic in Southern Ontario, as of May 26th the Atikokan General Hospital will begin screening anyone presenting to the Emergency Department to help protect patients, families and staff.

You will be asked the following questions upon arrival to the Emergency Department:
1. Have you had a known exposure to measles in the past 28 days?
2. Have you travelled outside of Canada or to an area of increased measles infections (i.e. Southern Ontario, etc.) in the last 21 days?
3. Do you have any of the following symptoms? Fever, cough, runny nose, pink eye, or rash?

If ‘YES’ to any of these questions, please put on a hospital provided mask and notify the nurse right away. Please ensure that your mask is fitting well, and covers your mouth and nose.

You will be asked if you know your measles immunity status. It may be helpful to know this information ahead of time. If the answer is ‘NO’, please continue wearing your mask and follow the directions of the emergency staff.

You are considered immune if you have one of the following:

- Minimum 1-dose of the measles vaccine more than 2 weeks ago
- Known history of measles
- Positive immunity serology documented
- Born before 1970

*A reminder to anyone presenting to the hospital for all other purposes to please stay home if you are sick. Masks and hand sanitizer dispensers are available at all public entrances and throughout the hospital. Please ensure that you are washing your hands upon arrival and during your visit to our facility.

If you have any questions regarding your immunity, please contact your family physician or Public Health
