Unfortunately, the majority of health care professionals are unaware of the negative impacts of mouth breathing on normal facial growth and overall health.
Children who mouth breathe may develop long narrow faces, narrow mouths, high palates, dental malocclusions, crowded teeth, and gummy smiles.
Nasal breathing is essential for the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a strong vasodilator that has been shown to increase oxygen efficiency by 18% and increase oxygen transport throughout the body. Mouth breathers have a lower oxygen concentration in the blood and studies have shown that this can be associated with high blood pressure and cardiac failures.
Studies have shown that children with sleep disordered breathing often have problems paying attention in school and may exhibit behavioural issues. Many of these children are often diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioural disorder in children. However, many of these children have sleep disordered breathing that remains undiagnosed.
