Unfortunately, the majority of health care professionals are unaware of the negative impacts of mouth breathing on normal facial growth and overall health.

Children who mouth breathe may develop long narrow faces, narrow mouths, high palates, dental malocclusions, crowded teeth, and gummy smiles.

Nasal breathing is essential for the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a strong vasodilator that has been shown to increase oxygen efficiency by 18% and increase oxygen transport throughout the body. Mouth breathers have a lower oxygen concentration in the blood and studies have shown that this can be associated with high blood pressure and cardiac failures.

Studies have shown that children with sleep disordered breathing often have problems paying attention in school and may exhibit behavioural issues. Many of these children are often diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioural disorder in children. However, many of these children have sleep disordered breathing that remains undiagnosed.

🛑STOP using tongue cribs and rakes to treat a tongue thrust!

Tongue thrust describes a swallowing pattern in which an individual pushes the tongue against or between the teeth. A tongue thrust is ALWAYS a symptom of another problem and requires the underlying cause to be addressed to eliminate the thrust.

Habit-breaking appliances like tongue cribs act as reminders and restrict the forward movement of the tongue. A habit-breaking appliance only attempts to block the heavy force of swallowing, which, even when added up, only amounts to about 20 minutes per day. Only treating the intermittent heavy force created by tongue thrusting is NOT treating the source of the problem.

Incorrect oral rest posture is much more important than swallowing as the light, constant pressure of the tongue and lips have much more influence on the teeth than the tongue thrust ever will.

Myofunctional therapy helps to:
✅Correct tongue resting posture.
✅Correct tongue placement while swallowing.
✅Prevent orthodontic relapse.
✅Stregthen and retrain the tongue and orofacial muscles to function as they should.
✅Help restore nasal breathing all day and all night.

Although pacifiers have well known benefits, they can also have harmful effects on the orofacial growth and development of children.

This study found that the forces generated from the plush animal pacifiers tested fell in the range of 0.47 N to 0.7 N. The force of the pacifier alone fell in the range of 0.05 N to 0.2 N.

The additional weight of the stuffed animal, can generate greater forces on the palate and erupting teeth of an infant or toddler. These forces can contribute to malocclusions, such as anterior open bite, posterior crossbite, and excessive overjet.

You may be wondering why someone would need Myofunctional Therapy - breathing, swallowing, eating and drinking are things we do all day everyday. But we rarely focus on what the muscles of our face and mouth are doing.

Are you mouth breathing or nasal breathing?
Are your lips open or closed at rest?
Where is your tongue resting when not eating, drinking or speaking?
What are your tongue and lips doing while swallowing?

Dysfunctional habits develop easily without us even realizing and these habits are challenging to overcome.

The main goal of Myofunctional Therapy is to restore NORMAL function of the muscles of the face and the mouth through muscle re-education and increased awareness.

Although these symptoms are common, they are not normal and should be investigated further. These are all symptoms of poor breathing and sleeping.

Children need to BREATHE well in order to SLEEP well. Snoring, noisy breathing, and mouth breathing at night can be early warning signs of bigger problems to come.

Sleep apnea doesn't just occur overnight. Obstructive sleep disordered breathing is a progression of sleep related breathing disorders that begins with mouth breathing and progresses to sleep apnea over many years. These sleep related breathing disorders often begin in childhood and should be addressed as early as possible to prevent the progression to more severe disease.

Do you or your child have any of these 4 core symptoms??
☑ Tongue Thrust Swallowing Pattern
☑ Low Tongue Posture
☑ Mouth Breathing
☑ Open Mouth Posture

👅A tongue thrust is a dysfunctional swallowing pattern that can be seen when the tongue pushes against the teeth during a swallow. It is always a symptom and not the problem. The underlying causes need to be addressed to eliminate the tongue thrust.

👅Low tongue posture is when the tip, middle, and back of the tongue are not up on the roof of the mouth at rest. When the tongue sits low in the mouth, it is more likely to obstruct the airway and cause breathing issues at night. It also causes changes to facial structure and appearance.

👄Mouth breathing is common, but not normal and unhealthy. Mouth breathing activates the "fight or flight" response and upper chest. It involves larger breaths, shallow breathing, 10-20% less oxygen uptake, and leads to over breathing.

👄Open mouth posture always indicates a low tongue posture. It is often a learned habit due to mouth breathing.

For many people, a glass or two of wine is something that they use to help them fall asleep. Unfortunately, alcohol is anything but a sleep aid.

Alcohol acts as a sedative. However, sedation is not sleep and we often mistake sedation for sleep.

Quality of sleep is just as important as quantity of sleep. Alcohol causes activation of the sympathetic nervous system - fight or flight response - and causes frequent arousals throughout the night. Regardless of the number of hours that you sleep, the quality of your sleep will be impacted and you will wake in the morning not feeling rested and refreshed.

Alcohol causes a significant reduction in REM sleep. REM sleep plays many important roles including: dreaming, emotional processing, memory consolidation, and brain development. One study found that participants had a 13% higher mortality rate for every 5% reduction in REM sleep.

Researchers also found a 21% decrease in the number of heart attacks occurring after returning to standard time in the fall when an hour of sleep is gained.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep breathing disorder that often goes undiagnosed. It is caused by the relaxation of the muscles at the back of the throat, which obstruct normal breathing.

Some of the myths associated with sleep apnea include:

1️⃣ Snoring and sleep apnea go hand in hand
Fact: Although people with sleep apnea often do snore, they don't always co-exist. So don't assume that you don't have sleep apnea if you don't snore.

2️⃣ Sleep apnea only affects men
Fact: Sleep apnea in general often goes undiagnosed, but the rates for women are higher than men. Menopause also increases the risk of sleep apnea.

3️⃣ Sleep apnea is related to obesity
Fact: While being overweight is a risk factor for sleep apnea, people of all shapes and sizes can suffer from sleep apnea.

4️⃣ Sleep apnea is not a big deal
Fact: Untreated sleep apnea has been linked to car accidents, job related injuries, cardiovascular disease, stroke, higher risk of depression and more.

5️⃣ Sleep apnea doesn't affect children or young people
Fact: The risk of developing sleep apnea increases with age, but it can affect people of all ages including children.

As airway resistance increases, disease progression occurs.

Obstructive sleep apnea does not just happen overnight. It starts with mouth breathing and progresses over time as airway resistance increases.
