One of the major benefits of quality assessment and treatment that doesn’t regularly get talked about is that practitioners can help to diffuse the fear surrounding your pain.

When you learn the specifics of what creates your pain and establish a plan that helps you to tackle it, you lessen the fear of the unknown.

“Can I push through the pain?”
“What created this pain and how can I avoid it in the future?”

“These treatments are working great, but do you offer longer sessions? Can we try a double session?”

Sometimes we start to experience the benefits of Osteopathic manual therapy and want to increase our rate of recovery or enjoy a longer treatment. However, the unfortunate reality is that longer treatments do not typically lead to better outcomes and often maybe actually put us at a greater risk of what some practitioners call overtreatment.

Excessive manual work in a single session can lead to worse outcomes unless the treatment style is that of a very gentle approach simply to relax the patient.

A better alternative to longer Osteopathic treatment sessions is to either increase the frequency of your sessions, or layer your treatments with a more active approach including exercise or physiotherapy.

If you have questions regarding the best approaches to your treatment or rehabilitation, don’t be afraid to send us a message or have a conversation with your favoured healthcare practitioner!

In our technology bound era we may have days that we feel trapped in our chairs, tied to our work stations, but it’s so crucial to incorporate some movement snacks through your day.
A 5-10 minute break every hour is enough for a short brisk walk, some squats, push-ups, lunges, or a few stretches that your physiotherapist gave you.

Injured and not sure what to do?
Should you rest?
Should you keep moving?

When to rest:
1. If there is suspected hard or soft tissue damage (usually occurs during high degrees of loading and presents with a high degree of inflammation/swelling).
2. When the pain is high and persistent. If the pain remains high for longer than 24-48 hours and is consistent with no relief with certain positions or movements, it is best to rest.
**In either of these cases it would be best to see your doctor or receive emergency care where further investigation and imaging can be done.

In most other cases it is best to stay moving. Pain is not always indicative of tissue damage and often even with small degrees of tissue damage, movement can actually help to aid in improving blood flow and remodelling of tissue during the early stages of healing.
