This is a great reminder to schedule your annual blood parasite screening test TODAY so that you can get started on your seasonal prevention ASAP‼️

⚠️ Heartworm is here in Ontario β€” and it’s closer to home than many people realize.

This blood film shows microfilaria (baby heartworms) from a heartworm-positive dog born and raised in Northumberland County. No travel history. No southern rescue. Just a local Ontario dog exposed through mosquito bites. 🩸

Heartworm disease is caused by parasites spread by mosquitoes and can lead to serious heart and lung damage in dogs. The scary part? Many infected dogs show few or no signs until the disease is advanced. πŸ«€

The good news: heartworm is preventable. Monthly prevention and routine testing are the best ways to protect your pets.

As mosquito season approaches, now is the perfect time to make sure your dog is up to date on their heartworm prevention and annual screening. 🦟🐢❀️

WHY an annual preventive care exam is sooo important for your pet, WHAT the veterinarian is looking at and WHY you should come see us here at Bayview Wellington Veterinary Clinic πŸ§‘β€βš•οΈ

A typical preventive care exam is broken down into 3️⃣ parts

1) The physical exam: During your pet's annual preventive care exam the vet is looking for changes in your pet's weight, eyes πŸ‘€, ears, skin, oral health 🦷, joints etc which may indicate signs of illness.

2) Diagnostic screening tests are typically recommended: such as blood, stool πŸ’© and urine. These tests and their subsequent results help us to detect disease processes early (sometimes even before symptoms arise), and help us manage and track your pet's overall health. 🩺

3) Follow up recommendations: Based upon the physical exam findings, subsequent lab results and the current season, our veterinarian will make their treatment recommendations for your SPECIFIC pet and their lifestyle. πŸˆβ€β¬›πŸ•

This may include a discussion regarding important immunizations πŸ’‰, deworming meds πŸ›, flea/tick and heartworm preventions. 🦟

As you can appreciate all these steps take time, but here at Bayview Wellington Veterinary Clinic we are delighted to offer 30-60 minute appointments with each of our dedicated veterinarians to make sure your pet is provided the best care available for all of their individual needs πŸ₯°

Please call ☎️ or text us πŸ“±at 905-503-7387 to schedule your four legged best friend's appointment TODAY❗

We can't wait to watch these two pups grow and bond within their loving family πŸ’œ

πŸ“’ Introducing Aurora’s Pet Food Bank! 🐾

This handsome pup named "Marty" was in to see Dr. Wong yesterday for his new puppy check up 🐾

At just 17 weeks of age he already weighs in at 32lbs❗

It's good that he is a gentle giant as he is going to be one big boy πŸ₯°
