This one is mostly for “my dancers” but it applies for all athletes. It’s also not chiropractic related, it’s just from me as a mom and former competitor.
Harley came out of one of her dance classes last week and she was a bit sad and frustrated and she said “I don’t know why but I wasn’t very good today”. So we had a conversation that we’ve had before but she didn’t remember. We talked about the rule of thirds. This is not my rule, I didn’t make it up (Olympic athlete Alexi Pappas has spoken and written about it). I heard it once and it stuck with me so I like to pass it on. I told her “good! Then you’re right where you should be! If you were doing your best work every day I would know you weren’t pushing yourself hard enough!” And then I reminded her that the rule of thirds is that you should be average 1/3 of the time, struggling a bit 1/3 of the time, and crushing it 1/3 of the time. Then you know you’re pushing yourself to be better!
Today we were talking about her competition yesterday and the stuff she felt like she improved on and she said “I think yesterday was my really good third!”
So on the days you’re not your best, you’re not even your average, remember, you should be struggling sometimes! That’s how you know you’re pushing yourself to improve ❤️ Good luck today if you’re still competing!
