Midwives of York Region

Midwives of York Region MYR is a midwifery clinic that serves the York Region community. With privileges at Southlake Health. We are a practice of ten Registered Midwives.

We offer a choice of birthplace: home or hospital. We hold admitting and discharge privileges at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. We work in teams to offer 24-hour oncall availability. Our office is located in Aurora.

“Increasing numbers of Canadian women are choosing midwives for four main reasons: midwives' philosophy of childbirth as a natural process, involving a wholistic and

supportive approach; continuity of care throughout the childbearing year, which fosters safety and respect; cultural and political factors; and most importantly, the maintenance of a sense of control over their birth experience.”
”A brief overview of why women choose midwifery care ” by Annemarie van Oploo, BScN

“Midwives have been part of the human experience for as long as we know. The Latin term cum-mater and the Spanish and Portuguese term comadre, have the same meaning: with woman. At the present time, there is no doubt that midwives offer women safe, effective care with good outcomes; now midwives ourselves are looking at our practice to see just what we do that makes this so. We believe that the answer lies in our name; that is, we are ‘with women.’”

The Power of Nurses to Transform Health

Today is International Nurses Day.

Today we want to shout out to all the wonderful nurses we have the privilege of working alongside every day at southlakehealth. We could not be the midwives we are without all of you on the unit.
From the labour and delivery nurses who come in at a moments notice when we need help.
The postpartum nurses who care for MYR clients after they’ve had their babies.
The NICU nurses who support our clients who support our MYR babies through some of their toughest days.

When they are often stretched way thinner than they should be, and underpaid for the absolute invaluable work they do - we see you and we know your worth.

Thank you. 💜

Spencer and I getting to catch up with midwife Kate during one of our neonatal follow up appointments back in the fall. Officially happy and proud to say he’s a NICU warrior and graduate from Southlake’s neonatal team. Kate was there for me during my early stages of labour of having a premee to staying with me to keep me company when little man was taken down to Mount Sinai.. When hubby had to be home with our eldest and I was still hospital bound.. To having such incredible care for me during his NICU stay to continuing their amazing care on discharge from hospital to home. Team #2 with Erin (as a student) was absolutely wonderful ❤️

Today we remember ❤️

Today is not a campaign.

It is not a hashtag.
It is not a moment.

It is a remembering.

Across this land, Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people are missing.

They are loved.
They are remembered.
They are still being called home.

Behind every name is a voice that should still be heard.
A laugh that should still fill a room.
A presence that should still be held in community.

And behind every absence is something we must be willing to face.

This is not random.

It is not isolated.

It is the result of generations of systems that have made Indigenous bodies less safe, less protected, less seen.

Colonial violence did not end.

It changed shape.

It moved into systems.
Into policies.
Into the spaces where care should exist—and too often does not.

At Grandmother’s Voice, we do not approach this day as something separate from our work.

This is the work.

To remember.
To speak.
To listen.
To act in ways that restore safety, dignity, and connection.

We sit with the truth that awareness alone is not enough.

We ask harder questions:

How do people move through systems today?
Are they safe?
Are they believed?
Are they supported in ways that do not create more harm?

Because this is not only about those we have lost.

It is about those who are still here.

It is about creating communities where Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people are not just acknowledged—but protected, respected, and held in care.

Today, we wear red.

We honour.
We grieve.
We remember.

But we also commit.

To doing this work differently.
To building relationships that matter.
To ensuring that the systems we are part of do not continue the harm we say we stand against.

This is not a moment.

It is a responsibility.

We remember them.

And we carry them forward in how we show up—from this day on.

Hi there! I am 17 months post partum and wanted to share a story about Erin Miller for Midwife day! Erin made my first time mom ‘pregnancy, birth and postpartum’ experience one I will never forget! She truly exemplifies what midwifery care is all about! She truly cared for myself and my son in a way that family would! When my son decided to make his grand entrance 20 minutes after arriving to the hospital - so many emotions and big feelings were flowing through myself, not being sure if I could do it or how I would! Erin truly made me feel like a super woman and was there to remind me at every point that my body was made for this and I COULD do it! Our postpartum care was none other than everything I could have asked for, every late night text message answered with ease, visits to our home and all questions that supported my postpartum journey!

This is Elliot then and now and boy are we so grateful and lucky to have had Erin a part of our journey!

Thank you Southlake Health! 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you Southlake Health!

🥰🥰🥰

Today, on International Day of the Midwife, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible midwives who are there for families through some of life’s most meaningful moments.

Erin and Meganne describe their role as a privilege, providing safe, evidence-based, person-centred care through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum journey. Whether at the hospital, in clinic, or visiting families at home, midwives are there every step of the way championing informed choice, supporting physiological birth, and working closely with physicians and care teams when it matters most.

On call 24/7, their commitment ensures families feel heard, respected, and supported from the very beginning.

Thank you, Erin and Meganne, and all midwives at Southlake, for the compassion and expertise you bring to our community every day.
