Ola folks! Yay, it's Hump Day!!

Okay, it doesn't take a rocket scientist or a degree in Engineering Physics (my brain hurts thinking about that one!) to clue into the fact that the health and fitness industry is BIG BIG BUSINESS!

Worldwide fitness institutions brought in a whopping 80 billion dollars in the last year alone. Sooo, I am willing to bet that more than a few of you have at one time or another cranked up a spinning bike, cut some rug in a Zumba class or thrown around a few rocks in your fave fitness centre.

Apart from the initial excitement of "signing up" and the visions you have of "really getting into shape this time" going to the gym can be daunting at times. It is not uncommon to see people wandering around trying this and that and hoping that they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Hell, even though I have been in the industry for the better part of two decades, when I am travelling I can come across some machine or contraption of which I have no clue what the devil I am supposed to be doing.

This is when you must put your ego, pride, or embarrassment aside and actually read the instructions, google it on your smartphone and watch a video on the equipment's operation, call a friend, or actually...gasp...ask one of the staff. Hey, you paid good money for the pleasure of killing yourself in the gym, you don't want to throw that money into the wind right?

Invariably, you get yourself sorted out, figure it out and off you go. Now, let say one day you are doing your thing and you see "dude walk over to that same piece of equipment that had you virtually dumbfounded one week prior, and "dude" gets on the machine and suddenly is doing something which looks like a chicken and rooster mating dance https://youtu.be/LvLEp8eFNC0
Now, give the dude credit that he is at least trying. I find this guy somewhat refreshing because he doesn't seem to give a rat's ass what anyone thinks about his Ninja routine. For the most part, he is harmless to himself and others around him.

What scares the bejeezus outta me is "That Guy." Let's call him TG for short. Now TG is someone who not only puts himself at risk but depending upon what he is doing can put others at risk also. TG is the strongest man in the world. No doubt about it, he will demonstrate his super-human strength every chance he gets. Not only will he regale you with his incredible feats of strength he will do so despite the fact:
1. He doesn't have the slightest clue what is meant by the term "technique."
2. He doesn't care that he doesn't know what is meant by the term "technique"
3. He is all about lifting as much weight as possible to impress the ladies and his buddies and anyone else who may glance his way
He doesn't think that a slight mishap could result in serious injury to himself or others around him

Okay, maybe I am being a little harsh. But trust me I have seen this time and time again. And it just isn't teenage boys (who seem to get the most press on being TG), it is doctors, and lawyers, and construction workers, etc. This type of behaviour is not limited to any one social class, occupation, or gender. Though my anecdotal evidence suggests it is mostly males (actually come to think of it I have read many studies which actually back up the mostly male theory...that post will be for another day).

Please don't emulate "That Guy." TG is not doing himself any favours. He is going to hurt himself, hurt someone else, or in the best-case scenario, he will wonder why it is taking so damn long for him to reach his goals. I cannot stress enough to each and every one of you how important correct technique is when performing any number of exercises or movements. It doesn't matter if it is a machine, cable apparatus, free weights, TRX, spinning, core class, or whatever. Depending upon what you are doing poor or incorrect technique can limit your performance, contribute to injury, further enhance poor movement patterns, or in an extreme case be the cause of someone else's injury.
In the case of TG, not only was technique thrown out the window, adding more weight than what he can handle was a recipe for disaster.

In this particular case, TG was apparently performing a fairly demanding exercise called a deadlift. Deadlifts can be performed in a few different variations such as straight-legged, Romanian, conventional, etc. If not performed properly as with many other lifts it can turn you into an accordion pretty fast.
While TG did not turn himself into an accordion on this particular day he certainly did himself no favours with his incredibly poor and unsafe technique. Quite frankly I am not sure how he did not blow out his back. In fact, I had 911 on speed dial just in case.

As I mentioned earlier TG was a young fellow who in this case probably didn't know any better. But he sure didn't need "Good Buddy" egging him on to "put some real weight on that bar." Yes just what Junior needed some helpful advice from GB.
At this point, my wife knows exactly what is going on in my tiny little mind so she sidles up to me and very quietly whispers in my ear "Rich, just let them be." Despite my better judgement and using every ounce of self-control I patted away the blood being drawn from my upper lip, finished up my training and left the boys to their business.

Please don't be "that guy" or "that girl." It is imperative that if you are inexperienced or undertaking a new workout routine to ensure you receive adequate instruction or supervision in order to assure safe and optimal technique. At the very least check out some reputable online sources such as USA Weightlifting or the Canadian Weightlifting Association to get a better idea of proper technique and safety considerations.

Please don't hesitate to drop me a vine if you should have any questions at all. I would be happy to help you find an appropriate answer or solution to your concern.

Have an awesome rest of your week!!

I love the KISS principle! I strive for this in all aspects of health, fitness, and sports programming. For instance, weight management or maintenance can be boiled down to the simple equation of calories in/calories out. BUT, as Brian St. Pierre (Director of Performance Nutrition for Precision Nutrition) has stated in the past, "Energy balance determines body weight, but not body composition."

In other words you may have had wonderful success on that new jelly bean diet (all jelly beans all the time) in getting to your goal weight; however, it will in no way guarantee suitable changes in body fat percentage, lean body tissue, bone density, bodily water %, etc. Not to mention that your horrible nutrition will result in decreased immune system function, reduced brain operation, compromised human performance, and so on. You are what you eat folks!

Wanted to thank my good friend Lisa Cindric for her wonderful and efficient work on my new logo for 46 Sport and Fitness. I had asked Lisa to take the the logo she had created for A Step Up (my former training studio in Chelsea) and throw in the name of my new venture. Well, I should have known better as Lisa pleasantly surprised me with a new mock-up. After a bit of back and forth, voila, we have a brand spanking new logo for 46 Sport and Fitness! Thanks Lisa, you rock girl!!!!

From a good friend, Louise Killens. You will kill yourself laughing at this...

A WOMAN'S WEEK AT THE GYM

If you read this without laughing out loud, there is something wrong with you. This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine.

Dear Diary,
For my birthday this year, my Husband (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me.

Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.

My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

________________________________

MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Christo waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!

Christo gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring!

Christo was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week-!!

________________________________

TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Christo made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mil e. His rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT-!! It's a whole new life for me.

_______________________________

WEDNESDAY:
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Christo was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. His voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.

My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Christo put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Christo told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other s**t too.

_______________________________

THURSDAY:
As***le was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a half an hour late - it took me that long to tie my shoes.

He took me to work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. He sent some skinny bitch to find me.

Then, as punishment, he put me on the rowing machine -- which I sank.
_________________________________

FRIDAY:
I hate that bastard Christo more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little aerobic instructor. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it.

Christo wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the damn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

________________________________

SATURDAY:
Satan left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing his voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

________________________________

SUNDAY:
I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my husband will choose a gift for me that is fun -- like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!

Well, here it is. The finale to my trilogy of why we freakin’ well hate to exercise! For a recap on Parts I & II please see the following http://www.46sportandfitness.com/hating-exercise-and-other-reasons-why-we-miss-workouts-and-what-we-can-do-about-it-part-ii/ and http://www.46sportandfitness.com/hating-exercise-and-other-reasons-why-we-miss-workouts-and-what-we-can-do-about-it-part-i/.

Previously, we looked at some strategies to get you back on track when dealing with injuries or depression. Now we will have a look at some of the other reasons holding us back from keeping a consistent and progressive fitness, exercise, and health program.

Fact--What we do in our daily lives is a function of priorities. Regardless of what these priorities are based upon, our everyday actions and behaviours are governed by these priorities. As I heard stated on many an occasion by a man I respect and admire greatly, John Phelan, “Life is a choice.” It really doesn’t get any simpler than that.

In no particular order, and not an exhaustive list, here is a quick list of some of the more common priorities of most people:

Work/career/school
Family
Friends
Money/standard of living
Your personal health or well-being
Extra-curricular life
Spiritual being

Having been in the health, fitness and lifestyle business for the greater part of thirty years I would like to believe that I have a pretty good understanding of how people prioritize the different aspects of their lives. Normally I would say that most people have 2 or three top priorities which tend to dominate their lives. My anecdotal opinion is #1, #2, and #4 appear to come up more frequently as top priorities for most people with #3 coming in on the heels of #4.

Your priorities will, without a doubt, provide you with the motivation to adopt or remain consistent in a fitness program. These same priorities will also provide you with every excuse in the world to miss a workout(s) and more than likely procrastinate on implementing or re-engaging yourself in a fitness/activity plan. The one common thread which relates all the above mentioned priorities is, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da (my weak effort at representing a drum roll), TIME!

How often have you either said to someone or to yourself “I just don’t have stinkin’ time to go to the gym this week!” If I had a dollar for every time I heard that…! Now, I am going to be a little tough here. Many people will be pi**ed at me when I say that “this is one of the lamest excuses for missing a workout!!!”

Here is an exercise for you. Take a spreadsheet and lay it out like a calendar showing Monday through Sunday. Every cell below the days of the week represents a 30-min block of time. If my math is correct then there should be 48 blocks under each day. So everyday has 48 blocks of 30 mins.

Are you going to tell me that you can’t find a 30-min block of time in each or every other day of the week to do some type of workout or activity? Knowing all the benefits attributed to regular exercise and activity which are scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt may I add, you still can’t justify or find the time to incorporate this into your schedule? Nonsense.

Yes you are busy and yes your other priorities use up those precious 30-mins blocks of time rapidly. Especially these days, the demands on your time are greater than ever. The priorities you have set and following through on these priorities can be exhausting. Getting kids to sports or activities, extracurricular work functions or meetings, groceries, social activities with friends and family, laundry, cleaning, financial planning for your future, visiting sick friends or relatives, church activities, home renovations, parent-teacher interviews, professional association meetings, art class, book club, watching the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup, the list can go on and on.

Contrary to popular belief you cannot “make time” to do something. But you can use the time you have to fit in regular exercise or activities. Negotiate with your better half for time to be involved in a recreational sport or other fitness related activity especially if you have young children. The possibilities are boundless, as Mr. Spock fondly would say “There are always alternatives.”

Get up earlier and find an early morning swim club or get your butt to the gym before work. Hire a professional who can create a fitness program which will be effective for you no matter how much time you may have. Not only will you get great bang for your buck but you will also have to answer to someone thereby providing the all important ACCOUNTABILITY which is extremely effective in maintaining regular exercise. Find something you love to do. This will definitely make it easier and more palatable to make the effort in finding time for exercise and fitness related activities.

The bottom line is your priorities require time. In order to effectively handle everything you put on your plate, you need to rank your health and fitness upwards and move that to the top of your list, not the bottom. The benefits you will receive will more than outweigh the time required and you will be amazed at how effective and productive you will be at satisfying the rest of the priority ladder.

Do you stride into the gym confident in what you will be doing and how you are doing it or do you go to the gym and wander aimlessly around wondering what the hell to do? Do you try to decipher the instructions on the latest machine and feel like you need a degree to understand how to use it? Do you quizzically watch Hercules power clean 285 lbs with ease yet when you try to do the same with a 2.5 lbs wooden stick the only thing you get is a sore back and a nose bleed from flinging the stick up and into your grill.

You are not alone. Everybody has different strengths. You might be an academic, a financial whiz, or super mechanically inclined. You might not be interested in how to understand the intricacies of resistance and fitness training, and you may not care or have the time to put together a sensible and productive plan.

Just as we hire mechanics to fix our cars, tech geeks to fix our computer devices, and fashion designers to decorate our homes, a fitness coach or personal trainer can help with the most important aspect of your life, your personal health and well-being.

Trainers and coaches will take all the guess work out of developing and implementing a progressive and successful health and lifestyle plan designed personally for you. No more wasted workouts, no more fitness pitfalls and plateaus, no more feeling nervous or intimidated, or unsure of yourself. Not only will you maximize your progress but if you choose to, your trainer should be happy to empower you with as much pertinent info as possible. The more you are empowered the better your accountability and ultimately the greater your results.

All this info is great, right? But what if, like Bones, you hate hate hate hate to exercise? Well, I could say once you start you will be so thrilled with your progress and how you feel that you won't be able to wait to get to the gym. Unfortunately, this euphoria or "honeymoon phase" normally only lasts a short period of time.

To increase the likelihood of adherence and consistency find a work-out buddy or join a team or group where people expect to see you or are counting on your attendance. The accountability of not wanting to let others down is a powerful motivator for many folks.

As mentioned earlier hiring a trainer or coach also increases the accountability factor ten-fold especially when you think of how much you are paying and what you will be throwing into the wind $ wise if you do not show up. I know that I will do anything to make my doctor’s or dentist’s appointment rather than paying a $75 no show fee. This form of negative accountability while not ideal, is effective. Let’s face it when you get right down to it, do you really care what keeps you consistent in your training regime?

I hope that this last entry, the third part of “Hating exercise and other reasons why we miss workouts and what we can do about it,” has given you some food for thought. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about how I can help you implement a successful health and fitness blueprint designed solely for you then please drop me a line or request a completely free personal consultation. What have you got to lose?

Hi folks,

Happy Hump Day compadres!

Okay, off we go. The hotly anticipated Part II of "Hating exercise and other reasons why we miss workouts and what we can do about it" is here hot off the presses. Let's quickly recap Part I.

Despite our best intentions, sticking to a consistent fitness or exercise schedule can be a tremendous challenge for a number of reasons. Rather than rehashing those reasons here see my last post http://www.46sportandfitness.com/hating-exercise-and-other-reasons-why-we-miss-workouts-and-what-we-can-do-about-it-part-i/ for a refresher.

As mentioned, the important thing to keep in mind when you find things are going south with your workouts is to recognize what the cause is behind your slip-up.

This will enable you to deal with the prevalent issue(s) by implementing a plan or strategy to effectively correct the situation.

No doubt you are waiting with bated breath for my earth-shattering answer to all of life's challenges as they relate to your health and fitness specifically "keeping consistent in your damn workouts."

As you are undoubtedly aware just like nothing in life is free so there is no magic bullet for solving the many external and internal influences affecting our lifestyle choices.

The first step is in recognizing the issue at hand. Sometimes this can be clearly evident such as an injury. Other times the issue can be more difficult to pinpoint such as when you are depressed.

Injuries are usually quite apparent so recognizing this can be rather simple. Depression is a whole other ballgame.

There are different degrees of depression and many folks may not even be aware that they are depressed. Other forms of mental illness such as anxiety or panic attacks can also influence one's ability to maintain consistency in their training.

If you or someone close to you suspects you may be depressed it would be advisable to speak with your family doctor. They will be best suited to help with determining a course of action. I know when I recognized that I was in a depression I was certainly glad I spoke with my doctor!

Assuming that an injury is the issue, what can you do? Well, depending upon the extent of the injury, your course of action could be somewhat different. In most cases a good coach or trainer, in concert with a medical professional such as a physiotherapist or chiropractor, can certainly put together a program to not only rehab the affected area but also keep you building and progressing toward your fitness and performance goal(s).

Depression is a major debilitating factor in not only keeping consistent with your workouts but also in maintaining a stable and productive lifestyle. Once you have recognized that you are depressed and have seen your health professional, hopefully, you are in a position to get back to what makes you feel great...being active and exercising regularly!

There is an abundance of scientific studies which unequivocally illustrates the positive effects regular exercise has on mental well-being. I cannot emphasize this enough. It can literally be a life saver. I know that personally, exercise and working out has carried me through some of my life's darkest moments.

Depression can leave you in a vicious cycle. It can take Herculean efforts to accomplish even the simplest of life's daily tasks never mind trying to perform even the simplest of workouts. The black hole of depression can swallow up any reserve energy you may have. It takes away your motivation and forces you into changing your priorities.

Even when things are great in life, exercise and working out tends to be located on the lower rungs of your personal ladder of priorities. It is when you are feeling like s**t that you NEED to reevaluate and make exercise a top end priority. This will start you on your road to recovery and before you know it you will have that bounce back in your step.

The positive feedback loop you have generated will sustain your momentum and put you back on solid footing. Making this happen is easier said than done. Having a work-out buddy, coach, or trainer will go a long way to ensuring you will not 'slip' and fall back once again. Should you 'slip' they will be there to provide the support, encouragement, and the accountability needed to prop you back up again.

I realize that I have somewhat limited our discussion to injuries and depression and how they can derail your workouts. In Part I we touched on a number of additional contributing factors such as general aversion to exercise, lack of time, and lack of knowledge.

These are important issues which need to be discussed so you can ensure your success in keeping up a consistent workout schedule.

Part 3 of "Hating exercise and other reasons why we miss workouts and what we can do about it" will give you some more tools for the toolbox in the fight against exercise apathy!

02/14/2017

Hi folks,

Hope all is well! Oh and HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!

A little story from my rugby playing days at Queen's University in Kingston.

After a Saturday afternoon match all the lads were at the beer-up (social with opposing team) having our usual grand ol' time. A group of us were trading stories about weight room antics and other fitness related shenanigans.

Like most of the population, varsity athletes do not necessarily love working out. They do it out of necessity to perform at a high level and as part of the commitment to their team.

Anyhow, one of the props on our squad, big Cam Matte, regaled us with a classic story which had us nearly pi***ng our pants. I will attempt to do justice to Cam's yearn.

During our off-season most of us weight trained to prep for the coming competitive season. More often than not we would do so with a buddy/partner for a number of reasons such as safety (spotting), motivation, and simply because "misery loves company."

Cam was no different and he had his usual training partner. As much as some of the lads were less than enthralled with fitness training, Cam's partner, I'll call him 'Bones', notoriously despised the weight-room and working out.

Well, as the story goes, Cam had called his partner the night before a training session to confirm and coordinate meeting up for the next morning. All was good and everything was set for the next morning to toss around some rocks at the Queen's gym.

The morning came quickly and once Cam was out of the rack and had stuffed some pizza from the night before into his gullet, he called Bones but was unable to reach him. Cam decided to stop in at Bones' place to see if Bones was still counting Z's.

Sooo, Cam arrived at Bones' crib and knocked and knocked with no response. Cam opened the door slightly and called out to Bones and still no response. At this point Cam was almost a little concerned.

Cam decided to walk in and see what was up. He called and called and checked all the common areas, washrooms, etc. Nothing! Finally he went to Bones' room, knocked on the door and called out again. Still nothing.

Cam slowly opened the bedroom door to find a recently slept in bed, but no Bones. Just as Cam was about to turn around and head out he heard a slight rustling coming from the closet. This was very very strange. Cam called out again and no response. He creeped over to the closet and flung the door open.

Sitting in the corner of his closet curled up with his knees to his chest his head buried in his forearms was...Bones." Cam began to laugh hysterically realizing that Bones had heard him coming and hid in the closet hoping to avoid the dreaded work-out! We never let Bones live that one down.

Why do we hate working out so much and dread it like we are walking the plank to a watery grave? Why is it so difficult to stay on a consistent fitness schedule? These are the million dollar questions and I have yet to hear from anyone, from fitness experts to psychologists to life coaches and everyone in between, a valid all-encompassing response as to why we will avoid exercising almost at any cost.

Personally, I don't believe there is one particular reason responsible for this phenomena of exercise avoidance. We know it is important and good for us. It enhances our lives in many different ways: it improves mental acuity, heightens emotional well-being, strengthens immune response, and augments physical attributes such as flexibility, mobility, strength & endurance. These are just a handful of reasons to include regular exercise in your daily life.

What the hell is stopping us from consistently exercising and basking in all of these wonderful benefits? Is it lack of motivation? Lack of knowledge? Maybe you have an injury holding you back? Have you been feeling depressed? Maybe you just lost your job and you can't financially do it? No time, being pulled in a hundred different directions? Or, like Bones, you just fu**** hate exercise.

I would be lying if I said that I have never let any of these issues hold me back from my health and fitness regime. Heck I would be super fibbing if I didn't own up to the fact that I have allowed each and every one of those reasons to derail me at some point in my life.

The crux of this is all of us have been there and will continue to sporadically be in those situations in the future. It is a fact of life and these circumstances are all legitimate and are not to be dismissed nonchalantly by anyone, including yourself.

The important thing to remember is if you find yourself in a situation such as outlined above you need to get out of it as quickly as possible. The longer you are stuck there, the harder it will be to get back on track. I am quite sure that many of you already realize this!

I always remind my clients about Newton's First Law frequently referred to as the Law of Inertia. Simply put (very simply) an object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest. So if you are stapled to the couch you are more than likely to stay there until someone kicks your butt to get up and start moving (as I often have to do with my kids).

The good news is once you start 'moving', getting into a fitness program or "whatever else floats your boat" the more likely you will stick with it. Hence when life gets you down kick yourself in the butt or get someone to do it for you.

Now this may seem a little harsh (the idea was to show you that action is necessary) but the onus is on you to formulate a plan to get out of those adverse situations when they occur.

My next post, Part II of "Hating Exercise and other reasons why we miss workouts and what we can do about it," we will look at some strategies you can employ to reduce your downtime and keep things going in a progressive and positive direction.

See ya soon!
