Wandering Is Not the Problem. Misunderstanding Is.

For too long, “wandering” in dementia has been treated as a behavior to control.

But what if it’s not a problem to stop…
What if it’s a message to understand?

Walking, pacing, moving—these are not random acts. They are often purposeful, expressive, and deeply human. They reflect a brain still seeking meaning, rhythm, familiarity, and sometimes even freedom.

When we label it as “wandering,” we reduce the person to a risk.
When we reframe it, we begin to see the person again.

The research is catching up to what compassionate care has always known:

Movement can be meaningful
Individualized care matters
Language shapes perception
Safety and dignity can coexist
The environment can either confuse or support
Access to outdoor space is essential

This is where dementia care must evolve.

Not toward restriction.
But toward understanding, design, and support.

Because the goal is not to stop the walking.
The goal is to walk with them safely, respectfully, and with dignity.

This is what it means to speak dementia.

Puzzles & word games
Journaling or crafts
Walks, gardening, light exercise
Social outings

Middle Stage:
Focus on familiarity and sensory comfort
Music & reminiscence
Folding towels, sorting items
Simple crafts

Late Stage:
Prioritize soothing, sensory experiences
Soft music & nature sounds
Gentle touch, hand massage
Warm blankets, calming scents
Reading aloud or quiet presence

✨ Across all stages: music, nature, and meaningful connection always help.

An 89-year-old mother… still caring for her 60-year-old son. 💔

Her biggest fear?
“Who will take care of him when I can’t anymore?”

That stayed with me.

Because so many families are quietly carrying this exact worry — trying to find someone they can trust, someone consistent, someone who truly cares.

This is why I do what I do.

To be that support.
To bring peace of mind.
To make sure no one has to face this alone. 💜

Saturday Encouragement for Caregivers

To every caregiver, this is your reminder today: you are doing something truly meaningful. Even on the days when you feel tired, overwhelmed, or unsure, your care brings comfort, dignity, and love to someone who needs it.

Your patience, your presence, and your strength matter more than words can express. Take a moment today to breathe, rest, and be kind to yourself—you deserve the same compassion you give so freely. Keep going, you are making a difference every single day.

🧠 Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)

🧠 Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) is a type of dementia that often begins with changes in behavior, personality, or language rather than memory.
It affects the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes shaping how a person acts, speaks, and connects with others.

A Note for Caregivers
FTD behaviors are neurological, not intentional. Your steadiness, structure, and compassion make an enormous difference. Seek support early, protect your well being, and remember—connection is still possible, even as communication changes.
