Why Does Mobility Decline with Age?

Mobility doesn’t decline ā€œjust because we age.ā€

It changes when strength, balance, reaction time, and sensory integration decline — all key to how we move.

These changes increase the risk of falls and loss of independence…
But movement is medicine.

Research is clear: the most effective approach is multi‑component exercise:

• Strength training to build muscle
• Aerobic exercise for metabolic health
• Balance + mobility training to reduce falls

Small, consistent movement = stronger, steadier, more independent living.

Ready to move with more confidence? Let's start together.

Client Win of the Week 🌟

This week, Anne shared something that truly made my day:

ā€œI can walk short distances without my cane, walker, or scooter.ā€

For someone living with spinal stenosis, this is a meaningful step forward. Walking can feel heavy or tiring, but with the right tools and strategies, progress is absolutely possible.

Using her ACTIVATOR poles, along with pacing and planned rest breaks, Anne is now moving with more confidence and less reliance on her usual mobility aids. Her commitment is paying off in such a powerful way.

These are the moments that matter — the small, steady wins that build independence and hope.

Living with spinal stenosis? Here’s what can make walking easier.

Spinal stenosis is a common condition where the spaces in the spine narrow and put pressure on the nerves — often leading to leg heaviness, tingling, cramping, or discomfort when walking. Many people notice they feel better when they sit or lean slightly forward, because this position opens the spinal canal and eases nerve pressure.

There are ways to walk with more comfort and confidence. Strengthening the hips and glutes, pacing your activity, and choosing flexion‑friendly exercises can all help.

One tool that has been especially helpful for many of my clients is the Urban Poling ACTIVATOR pole. These poles encourage a gentle forward lean, improve stability, reduce load on the spine, and activate the glutes — all of which support easier walking.

They’ve even helped my client Anne move from relying on a cane, walker, or scooter to walking comfortably on her own. Her progress is a powerful reminder that the right strategies and tools can make a meaningful difference.

A little throwback to January’s curling social with Quinnrehab Barrie!

I love moments like this — movement, connection, and a whole lot of laughs.

It’s a good reminder that staying active doesn’t always have to look like a workout. Sometimes it’s simply getting out, trying something new, and enjoying the people around you.

If you’ve never tried curling… 10/10 recommend for balance, coordination, and humility.

What’s one activity you’ve tried this year that surprised you?šŸŽ‰

That moment when your kid does something that makes your heart burst šŸ„¹šŸ’™

Our guy ran his first half marathon today at the Toronto Marathon—21 km of determination!
Finished strong with a time of 1:40:07, placing 976 out of over 10,000 runners 🤯. That is in the top 10%.

Beyond proud of you, B. What an accomplishment! šŸƒā€ā™‚ļøāœØ

What if walking could feel safer, steadier, and more comfortable — even with spinal stenosis?šŸš¶šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Many people with spinal stenosis want to start walking more — but pain, leg heaviness, or fear of losing balance can make it feel overwhelming.

I’ve been working with Anne on this exact goal, and one tool that continues to make a huge difference is the Urban Poling ACTIVATOR poles. They’re designed specifically for people with health conditions or mobility concerns, and they can make walking feel safer, smoother, and more comfortable.

Here’s why they help:

They support a gentle forward‑leaning posture that often eases stenosis‑related symptoms

They improve stability and confidence

They reduce load on the spine and hips

They turn walking into a full‑body activity without extra impact

If you’re thinking about starting a walking program with spinal stenosis, here are a few simple steps:

• Start small — even 5–10 minutes counts
• Set the pole height correctly — elbows slightly bent, shoulders relaxed
• Use the ā€œplant‑step‑stepā€ rhythm for smoother gait
• Walk at a comfortable, talk‑friendly pace
• Stop before symptoms spike

Walking is one of the most powerful tools we have for maintaining mobility and independence — and with the right support, it becomes possible for more people.

If you’re navigating spinal stenosis like Anne and want to move with more confidence, ACTIVATOR poles can be a game‑changer.

✨ If you’re curious about how to begin—just like Anne—reach out. The right tools and guidance can make walking feel possible again.

Still smiling from last week’s MROO Zone 9 meeting! 😁

I just heard from the organizers that the keynote received 100% positive feedback — not one negative comment. I’m blown away.

Their team called it the ā€œbest meeting to date,ā€ and honestly… the credit goes to the members who showed up ready to learn, laugh, and rethink what aging well can look like.

I’ve shared a public‑safe recap with MROO so members can revisit the big ideas without sharing client photos or proprietary content.

Thank you, MROO, for the warm welcome and the meaningful conversations. Motion truly is lotion. 🌼✨
