Need to cool down? Think watermelon!
Believe it or not, it is also part of Materia Medica in Eastern Medicine Traditions.
Key characteristics: cools, moistens, facilitates urination
Especially helpful when you are very thirsty, irritable and your urine output is low.
This summer treat is aka “natural White Tiger Decoction” for its ability to deal with so called in TCM Summerheat*, intense thirst and difficult urination.
Summerheat in Chinese Medicine is similar to heat/sunstroke concept. It is common during the heatwaves of the summer with fever, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, dizziness, heaviness in the arms and legs or the whole body.
The common method of administration of this medicinal herb of Materia Medica is to simply eat it or drink 100-300ml of juice.
The rind of watermelon, xi gua pi also has medicinal properties: it is for edema due to summer heat related symptoms disorders or jaundice.
Both rind and fruit has been used adjunctly for treatment of icteric hepatitis.
