Mind-Gut Connection:

Did you know that more information passes through the gut and the brain than any other two areas of the body?

That is because the gut is one of the most innervated (nerve dense) areas of the body. The phrases “gut feeling” or “go with your gut” have a little more meaning when you understand this.

This is why I believe it is so important to listen to your body and the symptoms you experience. Thus you are able to figure out if the foods you are eating are either energizing and healing you or bring on fatigue and cause you to experience a host of digestive symptoms like bloating, indigestion and cramps.

As a naturopathic doctor I help my patients understand how to discern what foods their body does not agree with and then build a diet plan to curb these issues, while still enjoying the foods they eat.

If you are curious about naturopathic medicine and how it might benefit you sign up for a free 15 minute consultation where we can discuss your concerns and outline a plan of action!

HYDROTHERAPY

Cold water therapy was one of the first modalities utilized by Naturopathic Doctors.

Injured animals were observed submerging themselves into cold water, intuitively to heal themselves of injuries.

I have been ending my showers on cold water since last August. I have even purchased a shower timer to track my progress.

Today I thought I would challenge myself further and take it to the next level. I was able to handle about 20 seconds in the icy waters. I’m happy with that for a first effort.

I like to think of this practice as a type of meditation. I use my mind to override my bodies pain signals to help strengthen my nervous system.

I find this helpful when sitting with patients in order to stay grounded while they relay their stresses. It helps me to be able to hold a calm energy and to transfer that to my overburdened patients so they can leave visits in a more relaxed state. Acupuncture and guided meditation are tools I use as well to achieve this.

From what I’ve extrapolated in my studies is that most diseases are caused or worsened by three things.
1. Poor digestion, absorption and elimination
2. Chronic inflammation
3. An overburden nervous system

Although these all are interrelated this practice focuses specifically with number 3.

Drop a comment if you’d like to know more about healing with hydrotherapy.

Are you controlled by anxiety?

Do you go way out of your way to prepare for things that may or may not happen?

Are you constantly thinking about worst case scenarios and avoiding things that you know would make you feel good?

It should be understood that fear and anxiety, although interrelated are separate things. Fear is the response to an imminent or perceived threat, while anxiety is the anticipation of such an event in the future.

Anxiety can be caused by many different factors including mental, physical, disease or drug related and any combination of the above. Most of these causes has to do with experiencing some type of STRESS.

With such a wide range of causes, symptoms and types of anxiety it can be confusing and overwhelming to know what to do to address it!

A Naturopathic Doctor preforms a full health history and exams that addresses all physical, mental and emotional concerns the patient has.

This way a individualized targeted treatment can be provided that best suits the specific needs of the patient.

A treatment plan may include diet changes, supplements, nutraceuticals and herbal remedies, positive health psychology and talk therapy, acupuncture, cupping, sleep hygiene and guided meditation.

Do you experience heartburn?

After you eat do you feel like there is a volcano erupting in the centre of your chest that spews acid up your throat?

I know, it can be violent. There’s a bakery up in Gravenhurst ON that I love and I needed to have one of everything when I went. That sugar overdose was reliably followed by a strong burn up the esophagus. But sometimes this pain would come when I was eating food that I thought was normal.

Many people will pop an antacid or even go on medication to stop the burn. That however comes with consequences. Antacids lower stomach acid and with chronic use train our digestive system to produce less acid. This actually leads to worse digestive issues. Some heartburn medications deplete the body of B vitamins and leach minerals that can lead to boneless longterm. These are suppose to be short term fixes but often are used for long periods of time.

If your looking to solve heart burn naturally try eliminating some of these offending foods and see if is has an impact: high fat/fried food, coffee, spicy food, chocolate, mint, alcohol.

If your looking for further help with diet and natural remedies to help with GERD/heartburn please reach out and lets talk.

What does a naturopathic doctor eat?

Since the beginning of January I have made a conscious effort to work on eating better and improving my cooking skills.

This is me doing well. However I don’t always eat this way. Food is one of life’s simple pleasures and I love to try new things and different flavour combinations. Some of my favourite foods are spicy fried chicken and ice cream!

But moderation is key. A good principle to live by is the 80/20 rule, where 80% if the time you are doing the right things. For nutrition That means lean meats/protein sources, plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and limited processed foods.

I don’t know about you but I’ll be having a couple beers and some loaded nachos while watching the game this Sunday. It’s because I have been eating this way that I have no concerns about occasionally indulging and the impact on my health. They don’t call it soul food for no reason 😉

If your curious about anything I’ve posted feel free to leave a comment and I’ll be happy to share my recipies.

Do you feel like almost every time you eat you need to lie down and recover?

Are you on the couch instead of exercising because you are suffering through cramps, bloating, heartburn, brain fog and just no energy to follow through on your plans?

When I was a child I use to have stomach aches all the time. In fact it happened so often that it became normal for me to lay down and watch tv after dinner in a daze until the feeling went away. Looking back its no wonder I ended up in school for holistic nutrition and naturopathic medicine.

After learning the ins and outs of nutrition and systematically experimenting with diets and foods I rarely suffer from any of these symptoms. I am even able to occasionally eat the same meals that put me in these food comas without issue, using proper strategy.

Food sensitivities are difficult to detect because they can occur between a couple hours to up to 3 days from ingesting the offending foods. Understanding this and being mindful of what you eat can help you to realize why your feeling certain symptoms. Next time you find your self doubled over on the couch ask your self what did I eat today? Then write it down so you know if this happens again you might need to temporarily remove that food from your diet until you improve your digestion.

If you are tired of feeling like a zombie please DM me or contact the clinic and learn how I can help you with diet, supplementation and food sensitivity testing to get to the root cause of your issues.

For those of you that know me well, know that I am fascinated by concepts of spirit and the collective consciousness of the universe.

I purchased a book a few months ago called The Book of Secret Wisdom, which is a translation of an ancient Tibetan text by author Zinovia Dushkova. I have been slowly reading this book a few pages at a time as a way to help me fall asleep.

Last night I had a particularly depressing conversation with someone and not an hour later I picked up this book and read a few paragraphs that completely resonated not only with the particular conversation I had but the current state of world affairs.
Here is the excerpt from that book:

“For those with Hearts open for all to see, it was a tremendous challenge to walk alongside people of the past whose heart was still blind. The stench of thoughts rotting in the foul miasmas of such darkened minds was making their joint path unbearable for the New Humanity. But those committed to the Mission of Divine Love did not have the right to deviate from their designated path or seek an easier way. Instead, they were obliged to pass without fail through whatever length of path that would allow their blind fellow-travellers to recover their sight from the Bright Light. And the Heart, now softened in the rays of the tenderest Love, would then have to make its Choice: to accept the Light of Love or shut itself up in the gloom of malicious negation.
Endeavouring to purify its own ranks, and hurrying on the stragglers who were still clinging with a long black tail to the thorns of the past, Humanity was taking rapid strides into the Future. But that tail was impeding progress, to the point that impatient minds suggested that it simply be cut off. Wisdom, however, indicated it was already on the point of atrophying and falling off on its own.”

Although this passage is speaking upon the past its relevance is present today as is the cyclical nature of our existence. I wanted to share this with my audience as a reminder to stay calm and focused on your own personal journeys, and to find and develop your inner-light in this dark time, as the rainbow comes after the storm.

Bitters

Simply stated bitter herbs are exactly what they sound like. In fact most herbs tend to have a bitter flavour. So why is it important to single out this action and how is it useful?

Well, bitter herbs evoke an energy that stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system, inducing the rest and digest state. This can be helpful for digestion as blood and energy are rerouted to the digestive system. Bitters can also be helpful for shaking us out of an anxious state or panic attack as the strong bitter flavour pulls our thoughts out of our immediate consciousness and temporarily take us into the present moment as we experience the intense taste sensations. We can then reorganize and reframe our perceptions to approach the stress from a better angle.

One pattern that has emerged is that the more bitter the herb, the stronger affinity it has for stimulating production and release of bile. Bile, which is comprised mainly of cholesterol and salts is synthesized by the liver and stored and released by the gallbladder. When bile is stimulated to be released from the gallbladder it enters the small intestine to emulsify and prepare dietary fat for absorption.

In fact this highlights two more botanical actions.
Choleretics - herbs that increase the production of bile.
Cholagogues - herbs that increase bile secretion.
The herbs that fall in these categories for the most part are particularly bitter.

The following are herbs that are often selected for their bitter action:

Gentiana Lutea - Gentian (the main ingredient of Angostura bitters used to flavour cocktails)
Artemisia Absinthium - Wormwood (the famous ingredient in Absinth)
Angelica Archangelica - Archangelica
Taraxacum Officinale - Dandelion
Chelidonium Majus - Greater Celandine

Culturally an aperitif (drunk before a meal) such as vermouth, gin or Aperol is served about 15-30 minutes before a meal to stimulate and prepare for digestion, which is often the same way bitters are prescribed. Digestifs, consumed after meals such as Jaegermeister, grappa or Becherovka also tend to also have lots of bitters, as well as sweet and carminative herbs.

There are also contraindications to be aware of if thinking about using bitter herbs. Ailments such as ulcers and gallstones can be negatively affected by bitter herbs and it is alway important to consult a licensed practitioner when using herbal medicine to be aware of all risks, benefits and interactions with other medications.

Carminatives

The use of carminative herbs are most commonly utilized to treat digestive complaints. They are rich in a compound called volatile oils, which has been used interchangeably with essential oils. Essential in this case refers to the plants essence, which should not be confused with the term essential fatty acids like omega 3 & 6 fats, where essential means that they are required by diet because the body cannot synthesize them. Volatile oils as their name suggests are not stable compounds and when ingested can stimulate and gently irritate the stomach to contract and relax. Thus increasing motility, while helping to reduce cramping, bloating and gas in the stomach. Carminative herbs are great as teas, but can be even more potent in tinctures. I usually make sure to steep the herbs at least 15 minutes to extract more of the oils. Below are a list of herbs that may be chosen when looking to treat with the primary action of carminatives.

Mentha Piperita - Peppermint
Zingiber Officinalis - Ginger
Foeniculum Vulgare - Fennel
Matricaria Recutita - Chamomile
Melissa Officinalis - Lemon Balm
Pimpinella Anisum - Star Anise
Angelica Archangelica - Archangelica

To reiterate from a previous post, herbs can have many actions and formulas are put together with primary actions in mind first, then the secondary and tertiary actions of the herbs are considered. Thus insinuating that each herb has its own profile of compounds and actions. It is alway important to consult a licensed practitioner when using herbal medicine to be aware of all risks, benefits and interactions with other medications.
