March is Workplace Eye Safety Awareness Month!

This month is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of eye safety in the workplace.

With many people spending long hours in front of screens, dry eyes, headaches and blurred vision are becoming a common problem.

In addition, jobs in industrial settings face different hazards such as flying debris, chemical splashes and other hazards that can cause serious injuries without proper eye protection.

Regular eye breaks, following the 20-20-20 rule, and using appropriate eyewear can help reduce and prevent accidents. Many employee benefits cover the cost of eye exams as well as glasses (safety or otherwise), so make sure to take advantage of these benefits if they are available to you!

Time really does fly, and before you know it 3 or 4 years have passed since your last eye exam!

Eye exams are recommended at least every 2 years to check for vision changes, as well as monitoring ocular health.

If you have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or glaucoma, eye exams are recommended yearly to ensure your eyes stay health (OHIP covers these eye exams with a valid health card).

If you feel like you have noticed changes to your vision, or just want to stay up to date with a current exam, give our office a call or e-mail to book!

Evening appointments are available on Mondays and Tuesdays (we are open 9:30am to 7:00pm).

You may have heard your optometrist recommend a Visual Fields test for you, but what exactly is a Visual Fields test?

A Visual Fields test measures how wide of an area your eye can see when focused on a central point. These tests can determine if you have any blind spots in your vision, and where they are. For example, if you have glaucoma, this test can show any peripheral vision loss from the disease.

Visual Fields tests can be an important part of eye care for patients who are at risk of certain diseases or problems that can cause vision loss, such as:
- Glaucoma
- Central nervous system problems
- Stroke
- Long term use of certain medications

Often, the ministry of transportation will require these tests for certain classes of licenses, or some job applications may ask for testing (such as Police, Firefighters, etc.).

A Visual Fields test is one of the many measurements we have available at our office, as part of our initiative to provide comprehensive eye care all in one place!

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness month! So what exactly is AMD?

AMD is an eye disease that causes a gradual loss of central and detailed vision, and is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 55, affecting ~2.5 million Canadians. There are two forms; Dry AMD and Wet AMD.

So what is the macula? A small section of the retina containing a high concentration of photoreceptor cells, and is responsible for central and detailed vision.

Dry AMD is the most common type, where the macula will gradually become thinner. Sometimes fat deposits, called drusen, can build up causing damage and vision loss. Typically there are no symptoms in the early stages of Dry AMD and thus regular eye exams are essential.

Wet AMD is less common but typically more severe, where blood vessels grow abnormally below the thinning macula. If left untreated, these vessels can leak blood and fluid into the eye and damage cells. This type can appear suddenly and progress quicker than Dry AMD. There are several treatment options that ophthalmologists use to slow the progression of Wet AMD.

Winter can cause some serious eye discomfort, and with more snow and cold on the way here are some tips to help!

1. Sunglasses! They're not just for the summer months! Especially with the glare that reflects off the snow, its a good idea to protect your eyes from UV all year round.
2. Use a humidifier! With increased time indoors and central heating, dry eyes can feel even worse this time of year. A humidifier, lowering the temperature in the room or keeping artificial tears handy can help offset the dryness symptoms.
3. Proper indoor lighting! Increased indoors time strikes again, dim lighting can cause eye strain and you may find you are reaching for your glasses more often than usual (if you are not a full time wearer already).

If you find your vision or dry eye symptoms are still bothersome even with all these tips, call our office to book an appointment! Our office number is 705-733-8883

Did you know that OHIP covers eye exams for children? Up until the age of 20, kids are covered once every 12 months for a full eye exam and no limit of partial eye exams within that time frame as long as they have a valid Ontario health card!

Doctors recommend a first eye exam anywhere from 6 months old to 3 years old, before school age. Even if you do not have any concerns about their vision, regular eye exams are encouraged to ensure that your child has the best vision they can. If you are interested in booking an exam, don't hesitate to give our office a call!

Did you know that January is Glaucoma Awareness month?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging the optic nerve. These symptoms start very gradually which has led to glaucoma being referred to as "the silent thief of sight". With these changes happening so slowly, oftentimes glaucoma can go unnoticed until it reaches later stages. The damage that happens in glaucoma cannot be reversed, and so early intervention is highly important to prevent vision loss. Regular dilated eye exams can be crucial in catching early signs of glaucoma.
