This week, we recognize the Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, Phlebotomists, Pathologists, and Pathologists’ Assistants who play a critical role in patient care at RVH.

Our laboratory professionals perform the testing and analysis that support diagnoses and guide life‑saving treatment. While their work often happens behind the scenes, it is essential to every stage of a patient’s healthcare journey.

Thank you to our dedicated laboratory team for your expertise, care, and commitment to patient outcomes every day. 💙

Partnerships are the cornerstone of improving and providing culturally safe care for patients.

Together with our colleagues from BANAC - Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle Indigenous Health Circle we were honoured to welcome Paul Francis Jr., Executive Director of Indigenous Health at the Ontario Hospital Association to RVH for a meaningful visit grounded in listening, learning, and relationship.

We opened the day with a song and smudging ceremony led by Mamaway Wiidokadaadwin's Traditional Healing Coordinator Troy Monague followed by brief remarks.

Guests, patients and members of Team RVH shared in a special meal prepared by our very own Mi'kmaq Red Seal Chef Cassandra Durham featuring many items from the health centre's Indigenous Menu. Her bison stew, inspired by a recipe passed down from her nan, brought culture and care to the table.

Sitting in circle for the afternoon, leaders and team members shared stories, successes, challenges, and future plans for supporting Indigenous patients through their care journey at RVH and in Simcoe Muskoka.

Through Indigenous Patient Services and programs shaped alongside community partners, we are working to improve access and outcomes in ways that are culturally safe and supportive.

By honouring Indigenous voices, knowledge, and relationships, we are working toward care that supports healing, respects lived experience, and responds to what Indigenous patients and communities have told us they need.

Chi Miigwech Paul for joining us today, walking alongside us in our work, and for your leadership in Ontario.

Today, we proudly marked an important milestone with RBC.

After years of commitment—and more than $539,000 raised through RBC Race for the Kids—RVH has reimagined space within the Emergency Department to create the Yellow Zone: a dedicated area for assessing and triaging patients presenting with lower-risk mental health concerns.

The space has been transformed into a calmer, more private setting, supported by mental health professionals. A shift that strengthens access to advanced care close to home, when it matters most.

Thank you, RBC for your commitment to supporting mental health care in our community.

💚 Saving lives with organ and tissue donation takes a whole village. And this April, during Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Month, we are recognizing some truly special members of Team RVH.

In partnership with Trillium Gift of Life Network, we recently honoured staff with Hidden Hero awards. They are the individuals who go above and beyond to support organ and tissue donation, often behind the scenes.

These team members play a vital role in ensuring patients and families are supported with compassion, respect and care at every step. Their work helps make life-saving donations possible and leaves a lasting impact far beyond the hospital.

We’re proud to recognize their contributions and the difference they make every day. Thank you for teaming up, being kind and doing great things!

Early cancer detection matters at RVH. Here’s why 💙

When it comes to lung disease, getting answers quickly can change everything.

Patients across Simcoe Muskoka can now access advanced lung testing close to home, helping care teams diagnose conditions like lung cancer earlier and with greater accuracy.

With technology like Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) and Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE), doctors can often confirm they have the right samples during the procedure. This can mean fewer repeat visits and faster results.

For patients, that means less waiting, less uncertainty, and the ability to start treatment sooner.
In the past, many people had to travel outside the region for this level of care. Today, it is available right here at RVH, keeping patients closer to their love ones and support systems.

Early detection. Faster answers. Better outcomes.

New research led by Healthy Barrie shows how accessible, neighbourhood-level data can drive real improvements in child health.

Published in Cities & Health, the study highlights how Barrie is using coordinated, community-led action and clear data visualization to support healthier childhoods. From walkability to food security, the Healthy Barrie snapshot tool helps partners better understand where needs are emerging and where to focus efforts.

Co-authored by RVH physician Dr. Matthew Orava and former RVH SPARK Award recipient Jessica Maher, the research offers a practical roadmap for turning evidence into action.

Today is Green Shirt Day, an observance created to honour Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet, who saved six lives and inspired thousands of Canadians to register as organ and tissue donors. Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall; RVH’s Dr. Doug Austgarden; representatives from MP for Barrie—Springwater—Oro-Medonte Doug Shipley’s office, the Trillium Gift of Life Network and RVH; donors and their families; as well as Charley Horse, marked the occasion by raising the Organ and Tissue Donation Flag at Barrie City Hall.

You can join the movement, too, and make a difference! Visit beadonor.ca to sign up and become an organ and tissue donor today. 💚

Babies do not always arrive on a schedule, and health needs can arise at any time. Patients and their loved ones rely on having care, compassion, and support close to home when it matters most.

That is why RVH is here 24/7 for the care needs of our community, today and every day. We are grateful to our teams whose expertise and dedication make moments like this possible.
