For many Indigenous peoples, Canada Day is a reminder of the lasting impacts of colonialism and systemic racism—realities that continue to shape mental health and well-being across generations.

At CMHA, we recognize that reconciliation is not a single act, but an ongoing process. As a network, we are learning, listening and working toward meaningful change. This includes building relationships with Indigenous partners, supporting community-led mental health initiatives and increasing cultural awareness among staff.

We know there is still much to do.

This Men’s Mental Health Awareness Day, we’re talking about what too often stays buried:

1 in 4 men are at risk of depression

67% have never talked to a professional

50% report weak or no social support

Su***de is the 2nd leading cause of death for young men

The numbers are even higher for 2SLGBTQIA+ and Indigenous men. Link in bio to read more.

June marks National Indigenous History Month. This is a time set aside to reflect on the realities Indigenous Peoples have endured and the truths that still demand our attention.

It’s a chance to deepen our understanding of Indigenous Peoples by learning about their histories, ways of life and the lived realities that continue to shape this land. It also means acknowledging the legacy of residential schools, the violence of colonial systems and the lasting grief carried through generations, while honouring a strength and resilience that continues to endure.

At CMHA [branch], we understand that true mental health support must be Indigenous-led. It must be rooted in culture, safety and self-determination and not imposed by systems that have historically done harm.

We also recognize that the mental health impacts of colonization, systemic racism and intergenerational trauma are not history. They are lived experiences, here and now.

2SLGBTQIA+ people in Canada face disproportionately higher rates of mental health challenges, substance use and su***de. Often, these can be rooted in feelings of rejection, isolation and discrimination.

That’s why visibility alone isn’t enough. We need equity. We need access. We need a mental health and addictions system that recognizes and supports the full spectrum of people’s identities.

At CMHA, we’re committed to doing just that. This Pride Month (and every month) we’re all in.

Introducing More Than Mental Health.

Because when we talk about mental health, we’re also talking about:

Safe and stable housing.
Reliable access to food.
Navigating the healthcare system.
Building strong, supportive connections.
Finding purpose and community.

Too often, people are expected to “get help” for their mental health without support for the things that cause or complicate it. That’s where we come in.

At CMHA Simcoe County, we’re here to support the whole you.

Stay tuned as we keep the conversation going.
